Anthony Nukpenu, the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) Greater Accra Regional Organiser, has expressed serious concerns about the security of electoral officials during the upcoming rerun of the outstanding polling station in Dome/ Kwabenya.
The NDC has rejected the Electoral Commission's (EC) directive to hold new elections at the Abokobi Women's Development Centre in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency.
“For us, we have not made any decision, but if they go ahead, I can’t guarantee their safety. I can’t guarantee the safety of the electoral officers who will be deployed to conduct that single polling station because the community has clearly indicated to your reporter that, should they dare, they have already voted.
“They voted on the 7th; they voted overwhelmingly for Elikplim Akurugu. That result stands. Should any official dare to come with a ballot box or ballot papers to determine another verdict, the community will not participate. However, they cannot guarantee the safety of those who will conduct the exercise,” Nukpenu said in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, December 29, 2023, as reported by Citinewsroom.com.
Additionally, he emphasized the community's firm stance and cautioned against any attempts to intimidate the residents of Abokobi through the use of military or police personnel.
“Nobody should think they can use the police or the military to intimidate the people of Abokobi. They will rise to the occasion, and what people want to see, they will see,” he added.
