The political landscape in the Okaikwei North Constituency is heating up as two formidable women, both incumbent MPs, gear up for what promises to be a thrilling electoral contest in 2024.

One of the two women is, however, in the race because of her decision to switch seats from her incumbent constituency in the Eastern Region, to the one in focus of this article, in the Greater Accra Region.

Okaikwei North, once a reliable stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saw an unexpected twist in 2020 when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) clinched the seat.

Theresa Lardi Awuni, running on the NDC ticket, made history by narrowly defeating the NPP's Fuseini Issah with 51.07% of the votes.

But in 2024, she's not just facing any opponent, but she will be up against another incumbent MP, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei.

Dokua is not only serving her second term as MP, but she has brought her influence in elections all the way from the Akuapem North Constituency in the Eastern Region for what is expected to be an epic showdown.

Nana Ama Dokua, who hails from Akropong in the Akuapem North Constituency of Ghana's Eastern Region, has been the sitting MP for Akuapem North.

But why settle for a third term in the same seat when you can shake things up? And that's exactly what Nana Ama Dokua, evidently a fan of fresh challenges, did by setting her eyes on the Okaikwei North seat, securing victory in the NPP parliamentary primaries on December 2.

As the current parliamentary candidate of the NPP in the constituency, she beat rivals like former MASLOC Deputy Chief Executive Alberta Afia Akoto and former MP Fuseini Issah in the race.

Now, in a twist that feels straight out of a political drama, Okaikwei North has become a battleground for two incumbents, both seasoned in the political arena and confident of claiming victory in one of the country's most fiercely contested constituencies.

With a population of 309,768, where females slightly outnumber males, Okaikwei North is known for its high voter turnout.

The 2020 election saw over 79,641 registered voters, a testament to the constituency's active political engagement.

As the 2024 elections approach, all eyes will be on this intriguing face-off between two powerful women, each with a proven track record and their personal ambitions; only one will emerge victorious.

The die is cast and everyone awaits the results of this contest, but not only after December 7, 2024.
