Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has vouched for the integrity of former President John Dramani Mahama.

The former education minister spoke during the launch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign in view of the December 7 general elections. She spoke on Saturday, July 27, 2024, in Tamale, Northern Region.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang touted Mr. Mahama as "the kind of leader Ghanaians want."

She emphasized, “Ghana needs a truthful and respectful leader in the person of John Dramani Mahama.”

She cast her mind back to the tenure of President Mahama, noting to the electorate, “We have tried him.” She asserted Mr. Mahama had “reflected on what is going on and he is coming up with new ideas.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed happiness that “Mahama did not give up on this country” and chose to run for office again.

She boldly declared Mr. Mahama’s readiness and ability “to rescue, stabilize, and redeem this country.”

At the same event, in front of a giant crowd, Mr. Mahama recalled Ghana was “making progress” during his tenure because “I did my best.” He, however, regretted the current plight of the nation he once led.

He assured the electorate they would find him to be honest in word and service if they sent him back to the Golden Jubilee House.

“I’ve been out of government for eight years now. I did my best. I wouldn’t say things were perfect, but at least we were making progress. What I can promise you is that I will be truthful to you. I will never tell you lies. I will never tell you things I cannot do,” Mr. Mahama said.

John Dramani Mahama, with Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate, was defeated in 2020 when President Nana Akufo-Addo sought a second term. He was originally vice president under President John Evans Atta Mills and held the reins when the latter died. Completing Prof. Mills’ first four years, he successfully campaigned to be president in 2012, securing a two-term victory for the NDC. He was, however, defeated by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2016.

On December 7, 2024, when Ghana goes to the polls, the NDC flagbearer, retaining Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as vice presidential candidate, seeks not only to be restored to the presidential office but to give Ghana her first female vice president. The biggest threat to this dream is Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the energy minister.
