Delta force attack: We were overwhelmed – IGP

Inspector General of Police David Asante Apeatu Inspector General of Police David Asante Apeatu

The Inspector General of Police David Asante Apeatu has admitted that his men at the Kumasi Circuit court Thursday were overwhelmed by members of the Delta Force.

The IGP made the comments while reacting to the invasion of the court by members of the vigilante group while proceedings was underway.

The marauding members of the group, affiliated to the ruling NPP, shockingly set free 13 of their members who had been reminded by the court.

Commenting the on the development at a news conference Thursday night, Mr. Asante Apeatu said the Police did not anticipate such a reaction from the group.

“We had police officers at the court and we had about 20 officers on standby but, if you remember we gave the accused persons bail when they were suspects and they willingly appeared before the court, so you can imagine that the extent of danger or likelihood of they escaping was not as high as we will believe.

“…they (police officers) were overwhelmed by the numbers that came to the court to beseech the court to enable these accused persons to escape,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Interior minister has assured the escaped suspects will be rearrested and prosecuted.

“They (escapees) are advised in their interest to go back by themselves or be subjected to arrest, that we assure.

When you flout the law, you shall be subjected to the law. Whatever party you belong, whatever position you hold…NPP or NDC, CPP or PNC, Ghanaian or foreigner, when you break the law you will be arrested, subjected to investigation and go through due process”.
