Elon University supports education in Sokode

Sokode (V/R), 12, GNA - Some staff and students of Elon University in the US have presented teaching and learning materials to support education in the Sokode Traditional Area. The team, led by Professor Brian Digree, also presented GHc 3,500 to develop education in the area.

The team had financed the construction of a three-classroom Senior High School block, a four-classroom Junior High School block for the community and an ongoing kindergarten over the past seven years. The community SHS had also received laptops and microscopes from students from the University. Togbe Fia Koku III, Paramount Chief of Sokode Traditional Area, said the area's eight years' association with the University had enhanced education and small scale businesses.

He said, "The construction of the new classrooms is helping positively in student enrolment and quality of learning and teaching..., the bee keeping and grasscutter rearing is bringing a change in the life of some people."

Prof Digree who had been installed Togbe Dake I, a Development Chief for the Area, expressed the hope that the mutual relationship between the University and the Community would help improve lives. Captain George Nfodjo (Rtd), the Member of Parliament for Ho Central who initiated the relationship, commended the University for its support. He also presented eight bundles of iron sheets and some furniture for the community SHS. Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, appealed to the people to develop self help abilities to develop the Area fast.
