Former GFA Chairman Lepowura MND Jawula has branded the Ghana Premier League as a weak competition, insisting this has contributed to the fewer number of locally based players in the Black Stars.

Former Black Stars Coach Avram Grant came under huge criticism for not inviting many local players to the Black Stars .

His comment is in sharp contrast to the view of GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi who believes the local game is one of the most exciting leagues on the continent.

Lepowura MND Jawula wants the FA to secure sponsorship for the league to entice players to stay longer to improve the standard of the Ghana premier league.

“Our league is weak we must admit it because you not see playing in Barcelona and you go and pick somebody playing in my Guan United”

“So what we should do is to get sponsorship for the league and make sure our players stay much longer in the league so that the league will be strong”

“In those days when Abedi -Pele and others were playing in Ghana, you use them and you will have no fear but now that is not the case”Jawula told Starr FM

“They leave for obscure countries to seek greener pastures and it’s not good for us”he added
