Ghana assumes presidency of UN Security Council in August

Accra, July 31, GNA - Ghana assumes the monthly presidency of the UN Security Council on Tuesday for August in consonance with the programme of work of the Council whereby each member assumes the presidency for that length of time.

A statement signed by Mr Jefferson Kwamina Sackey, Media Relations Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would chair an open debate on the theme: "Peace Consolidation in West Africa" on August 9 in the Council. The statement said the selection of the theme was to underscore Ghana's abiding concern for peace and stability in West Africa. It said the debate was expected to provide a platform for in-depth discussion on a wide range of international issues bearing on the search for lasting peace and stability in West Africa.

It would also seek to rally the international community behind the vital work of consolidating peace in the countries emerging from wars and the entire Sub-Region.
