Institute of Adult Education announces a new name

Accra, Jan. 5, GNA - The Institute of Adult Education (IAE) of the University of Ghana,

Legon has changed its name to the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education (ICDE). The new name, according to the University Council, reflects global trend in higher

education that now focus on lifelong people seeking credentials, advancing careers, changing

careers and enhancing the earning potential of students. ICDE seeks to be the centre of excellence for the efficient delivery of University-based

continuing and distance education to meet the challenges of national development and global

competition of the 21st century. In the last 61 years, the IAE had undergone tremendous changes in order to portray the

presence, standards and curricula of the university in public. It was established in 1948 as the Department of Extra-Mural Studies and evolved into the

Institute of Public Education in 1962 and re-named the Institute of Adult Education in 1966

due to the desire to promote Adult Education as an academic discipline in the university. The Institute now offers courses for the award of Diploma, Bachelor of Arts (BA),

Master of Arts/Master of philosophy (MA/MPHIL) in Adult Education as well as short

courses for organisations and community leaders.
