NUGS calls for explanation on fee increase

Accra, Oct. 11, GNA - The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) said on Tuesday it was still waiting for government's explanation on the 40 per cent increase of the student fees and other concerns.

The students presented a petition to the Ministry of Education in July after a demonstration asking government to explain the increases and help resolve other student grievances. A statement in Accra by NUGS jointly signed by Osman Ayariga and Austin Brako-Powers, President and Information Secretary respectively said though Students of Ghana had waited on the government for a response to their concerns there had been no indication so far. "It is the hope of the National Union of Ghana Students that government will act tactfully and quick on this 91life and death' issue before issues get out of hand".

The statement also called on the officials of the University of Ghana to urgently accommodate the stranded first year students who had duly paid their residential fees. "We call on students in general most especially students of University of Ghana, Legon, to be resolute and rally their strengths behind the NUGS and their SRC leadership as we attempt to find a lasting solution to the on-going crisis," the statement added.
