Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North Constituency, Alhassan Suhuyini, has said it will be worrying if Minister-designate of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba is passed and sworn in as sector minister.

All the Minority legislators on Parliament’s Appointments Committee voted against her approval citing her inability to undertake her national service as well as her posture during her vetting as reasons.

However, the Committee as a whole recommended Ms Djaba and five other ministerial appointees for approval by majority decision despite Ms Djaba’s refusal to apologise for describing former President John Mahama as “evil, wicked” and “an embarrassment” to people of the regions up north.

However, Mr Suhuyini said on Friday that: “I don’t think that it is culturally acceptable to refer to another person as an evil person or wicked person without any basis. If there are bases culturally, President Mahama was not just anybody but was the embodiment of what we stand for as a country. Referring to him as evil is not criticism that is an insult”.

In terms of the abilities of Ms Djaba to successfully run the ministry, Mr Suhuyini said “that was a Minster sitting before us and assuring us that she will take care of the vulnerable and aged in society as well as women and children. This is a woman who doesn’t even seem to have a good relationship with her mother, for us, we should be worried”.

Mr Suhuyini told Joy TV’s Joseph Opoku Gakpo on Friday, February 3 that: “If she cannot demonstrate her ability to contain her mother no matter how much of a difference exists between them, then you shouldn’t be hopeful that she will have any care of thoughts for any vulnerable person who is aged”.
