Our divorce issue is an emotional one; give us some privacy – Tony Lithur pleads

Lawyer for former President John Mahama, Tony Lithur is pleading with Ghanaians to give him and his family some privacy regarding his divorce case against his wife Nana Oye Lithur, a former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

According to Mr. Lithur, the process is an emotional and difficult one for his family, therefore, the public should allow them deal quietly with the case.

Portions of a divorce petition filed by the lawyer for Tony Lithur on May 2, 2018 at the Divorce and Matrimonial Division of the High Court demanding a divorce from his wife Nana Oye Lithur leaked on social media Tuesday.

According to the petition, “When the parties settled down to marriage, petitioner began to notice some unnerving character traits of the Respondent. While petitioner was aware Respondent was aggressive in approach to many things, nothing prepared him for what he later discovered of cruel and instinctively violent traits. She consistently exhibited physical violence and cruelty against every person that has ever lived with the parties, either as household staff or relative.”

The court among other things, is seeking Nana Oye Lithur “to enter an appearance either in person or by solicitor at the Divorce Registry of the High Court, Accra in the Greater Accra Region of the Republic of Ghana, should you think fit to do so and thereafter to answer this petition and that in default of your so doing, the Court will proceed to hear the petition and pronounce judgement your absence notwithstanding.”

Confirming the divorce rumours in a statement, Mr. Lithur said, "My attention has been drawn to the publication on social media of the docket copy of a Petition for divorce I have filed against Nana Oye Lithur at the Divorce and Matrimonial Division of the High Court, Accra and some pictures of us."

"While acknowledging the existence of the filed Petition, I would like to say that the process is an emotional and difficult one for us and our children," Mr Lithur noted in the statement.

"I would therefore very respectfully and humbly, ask the general public to kindly give us, our children and loved ones some privacy to deal quietly with this painful stage of our lives," he added.



Mr Tony Lithur and Nana Oye Lithur have been married for 27 years first customary on April 14, 1991, and subsequently celebrating the marriage under Ordinance at the Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra on January 16, 1997.
