Former President Jerry John Rawlings on Saturday, June 3 paid a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief of Wa ahead of his scheduled June 4 celebrations in the Upper West region capital.

The retired Flight Lieutenant was at the palace of Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV in the company of his party’s regional leadership including Member of Parliament for Nadowli-Kaleo Alban Bagbin. Former President Rawlings was at the palace to officially inform the Wa Na about Sunday’s event.

Addressing the chief and his elders, Mr Rawlings condemned the recent spate of lawlessness in the country, laying the blame at the doorstep of successive governments. He said the culture of impunity would have stopped long time ago if successive governments had dealt with the issues of lawlessness.

He said the recent lynching of army captain, Maxwell Adam Mahama, brings the issue to the fore, but he expressed confidence that government will address the issue and other similar ones appropriately.

He said government must deal with all persons involved in the murder. Speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief, who presides over the Waala Traditional Area, Guli Naa Seidu Braimah expressed worry about the current trend of impunity among the youth and called on the former president to support the chiefs, religious leaders and government to find a solution to it. Mr Rawlings was given a chieftaincy title.
