Voltarians mount pressure on Veep

Vice President Paa Kwasi Amissah-Arthur Vice President Paa Kwasi Amissah-Arthur

Intense pressure is being brought to bear on Vice-President, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, to immediately render an unqualified apology to the people of Volta region; else Voltarians would declare him “persona non grata in the region.”

The news item, which is making waves on various news media including social media to the effect that Mr. Amissah-Arthur has labelled the people of Volta region of “lacking reasoning and are laughable.”

With the headline:“NDC to boil As Amissah-Arthur Declares Ambition for 2020 and slams Volta Youth,” the story highlighted events at Cape Coast on the evening of Friday, 11th of December, at the Pempamsie Hotel organised by the Vice-President at which platform he declared his ambition for 2020 and slammed Volta Region Youth for calling him incompetent.

A group calling itself Volta Citizen Union have since indicated their preparedness to participate in any and all activities that would lead to Amissah-Arthur to apologise unreservedly to the people of the region and Ghanaians for his attack on the youth of Volta region else “we shall also declare him persona non grata in the region.”

The Volta Citizen Union in a statement signed and issued by its leadership in the persons of Emefa Dzorpke, Samuel Kudiabor, Joseph Agbleze, Godwin Dafeamekpor expressed regret over what they described as “unguided remarks by the Vice President against Voltarians.”

According to the group, they find it “uncouth and an insult on the dignity of the people of Volta region for the sitting Vice-President of the land to refer to a section of Ghanaians as “laughable and lacking reasoning.”

“If really the Vice-President in prematurely declaring his ambition for 2020 stooped so low to make such derogatory remarks on the Youth of Volta region at the Pempamsie Hotel, Cape Coast, we demand an unqualified apology from the Vice-President, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur, immediately or we take swift action.

It reiterated to Mr. Amissah-Arthur that just as many Ghanaians have seen him struggle to impress anyone, the Volta Youth for Development who lobbied for their favourite, the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Edward Doe Adjaho, to become the running mate, are entitled to their opinion on national issues and their rights as protected by the constitution must be respected.

The statement noted that it was rather unreasonable for someone who was supposed to be the Vice-President of the country to suggest that sections of the population are “laughable and lack reasoning.”

It asked rhetorically that “What lacks reasoning than a running-mate for elections to be held in 2016 declaring his lofty ambition to be President in 2021? Ghana is yet to see such premature declaration from a sitting Vice-President and this must be condemned by all even at the NDC leadership level as it could create unnecessary anxiety among most government appointees who may also be bidding their chances of future leadership of the party.”
