The President has accepted the request of the Chief Justice, Mr. Isaac.K.Abban, to proceed on leave prior to early retirement on grounds of ill health, with effect from May 1, 2001. The release said, pending the appointment of a substantive Chief Justice, the most senior of the Justices of the Supreme Court, Mr.Justice E.K.Wiredu, will assume the office of Acting Chief Justice in accordance with Article 144(6) of the 1992 constitution.

The President has accepted the request of the Chief Justice, Mr. I.K.Abban, to proceed on leave prior to early retirement on grounds of ill health, with effect from May 1, 2001.A release signed by Ms Elizabeth Ohene, government spokesperson, said the president has noted the long service of the Chief Justice to the nation and wishes him a speedy recovery, adding that the President hopes that he has a well-earned retirement.
