NPP Warns NDC: Police-State Activities Will Not Be Tolerated

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, today issued a stern warning to John Mahama and the NDC to immediately cease using police-state tactics to interfere with the preparation of evidence for the upcoming court case to challenge the EC's faulty declaration of John Mahama as the one-touch victor in last weekend's Presidential election.

"By now it is clear that the NDC is running scared and will stop at nothing to silence the voice of the people, who are increasingly demanding an answer about the systematic, coordinated, and deliberate manipulation of election results that the NPP has uncovered. Continued unwarranted acts of aggression against citizens who peacefully follow the legal process, including a raid by dozens of fully armed police and military personnel on a private office full of male and female students merely counting blue sheets, will lead this country toward a police state. We cannot and will not allow that to happen."

Sir John also cautioned NPP polling agents who are still compiling blue sheets to remain vigilant and resolute, as they have been blackmailed, bribed, and even physically threatened by NDC agents not to cooperate with the NPP's court case. He pointed out that the NPP hotline is still in operation, and that any polling agent from any party who has information about foul play during the vote tabulation process should call 028 955 7051-6 immediately.

"The magnitude of our case will shock the nation and the world and we have full confidence that the Supreme Court will treat it appropriately. Our primary interest is in assuring the people that their will, as expressed at the ballot box on December 7/8, will be recognized and the irregularities corrected. The most important thing for the NPP, as well as the nation's long term prosperity, is that the Ghanaian people retain confidence in the democratic process so that they will always accept election results as credible. This is a critical moment for Ghanaian democracy - we must prove to our neighbours, to the rest of the continent and to the international community that our institutions are capable of functioning freely and fairly.

He concluded by saying, "We are certain that the evidence we will bring to the Supreme Court will uncover a vast pattern of irregularities that cannot go unaddressed if Ghanaian democracy is to continue to thrive. We repeat our call to all supporters of the NPP and of our court case in search of truth and justice to remain calm. We thank them for the peaceful response throughout the country so far, even in the face of extreme NDC provocation."
