Without the doyen of Ghana politics,J.B.Danquah, there can be no Kwame Nkrumah.
It was the all-inclusive-minded J.B.Danquah led UGCC which 'imported' Kwame Nkrumah into the country, paid 'freight charges, import duties and clearance fees' on him to finally come and join the fight for independence.
Kwame Nkrumah could never have been able to come to the Gold Coast on his own without the help of the Danquah-led UGCC.
No human soul can ever deny that, not even the NDC god Afari Djan can deny that.
And if Nkrumah was 'imported' into the country by the Danquah-led UGCC to help the fight for independence, then how can he be the sole fighter for our independence ?
For all those beneficiaries of Nkrumah's dictatorship, who think they can negate the contribution of the doyen of Ghana politics,J.B.Danquah to Ghana's independence, they better consider suing their brains for non-support.

What is in a name? As Shakespeare once rightly wrote, "That which is called rose shall still smell sweet by any other name"!
I am prepared to even give the credit to Danquah for suggesting it, but what is the point? They guy was a CIA asset, and no patriot! What is more important - giving your child a name or protecting him or her from harm?
Of course, most of you even believe that colonial rule was the best thing that ever happened to us, and that Slavery was a favour "our white Masters" did to our ancestors!
How can anyone hope to argue with such a mentality? I do not only rest my case, I give up!

The fact that the Americans (CIA} had Danquah on their payroll has been long established in the released declassified information from the CIA archives. So, what don't you come up with a more factual refutation of this notion that JB was a CIA agent, instead of just spitting putrescent slime all over Mr. Mensah?

It seems the NPP dreads the "Blessed Spirit" of our founder Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, more than a Roman Catholic dreads the devil.
They are even sick unto death but their case is not hopeless. Because there is an immediate remedy, we proffer a suggestion to mollify them since all of them may have graduated in severe ignorance, including the so called imaginary history Professor Ocquaye etc. We challenge those to look up the definition of 'actuality' which Nkrumah represented and the 'diffidence' of Dr.J.B Dankwa, because that will confute all the unnecessary taboo and silly perturbations.
I yet again suggest to good Ghanaians barring none, to plead with Mr Asiedu Nketsiah to once again educate our intoxicated over pompous friends, Okoampa Ahoofe et al. on the other side of the aisle anent "one of their tributaries" of lies, as to who our true founder Nkrumah is, like he did to Dr Bawumia on his "you and i were not there pink sheet predicament."
You see Swarming over an issue in chorus sheepishly is by no means prodigious but silly to say the least.
6th of March 1957 was real and factual with bold inerrant actors and not a fantasy, dream or some erratic subliminal messaging of a latent J. B Dankwa as you are being led to believe. Nkrumah was it! Take it or leave it.

By Craig Murray, former Deputy British High Commissioner to Ghana
In 2004, Craig Murray was famously removed as British Ambassador in Uzbekistan after accusing the Uzbek government of human rights abuses. But from 1998 to 2002, Murray served as Deputy High Commissioner in Ghana. Here he tells how, against all odds, he helped leave a legacy of free and fair elections in the African country... It was November 1999 and I'd been Deputy High Commissioner in Ghana for almost a year - the culmination of 15 years' Foreign Office service in Nigeria, Warsaw and the equatorial Africa department in London.
I'd always been passionate about Africa and had immersed myself in its minutiae. Nevertheless, my father, who had a timber yard in Ghana in the Sixties, offered a little extra counsel before I departed, aged 40. 'If you see any good-looking girl, aged about 30, light skinned, whatever you do, don't touch her - she could be your sister!'
Not that this was a big concern for me. My most pressing duty was the 1999 State Visit by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, Enhanced Coverage Linking the Duke of Edinburgh, -Search using: Biographies Plus News, Most Recent 60 Days, accompanied by Robin Cook, the then Foreign Secretary. It was a three-day blur of activity, the teeming crowds displaying an uncomplicated and old-fashioned reverence.
A warning that the Duke was averse to looking at things without useful purpose proved absolutely right. As we stood looking at the strip of brass laid in a churchyard that marked the line of the Greenwich Meridian, he said to me: 'A line in the ground, eh? Very nice.'
Ghana epitomises much of the best of Africa, but also throws into relief the tragedy of the continent. It has maintained its higher education and has fewer extremes of wealth than elsewhere. But at independence in 1957, Ghana was richer than Argentina, Brazil, Malaysia or Singapore. Today, those countries are at least ten times as wealthy.
Corruption, cronyism, economic mismanagement, irresponsible lending by the West and the dumping of cheap food all did for Ghana. When I arrived with my wife Fiona, and children Jamie and Emily, Ghana had been ruled for 20 years by Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings.
The son of a Stirlingshire pharmacist and a local woman, he seized power in a coup in 1979, but claimed to have won presidential elections in 1992 and 1996, despite allegations of vote-rigging.
In his early years, Rawlings unleashed a political terror on Ghana. His campaign against the middle classes resembled Mao's Cultural Revolution. People were persecuted for having savings or two indoor lavatories. Market women were sometimes killed for 'profiteering'.
The Queen's visit delighted Rawlings, who craved international respectability. I, too, was determined to make the most of the trip, by helping ensure Rawlings gave up power by the start of 2001, as the constitution required because he had served two four-year terms.
The Queen's speech to the parliament in the capital, Accra, was to be the focus of the visit and I had contributed to its drafting. It contained the usual guff about a future based upon partnership, but there was a sting in the tail. 'Next, year, Mr President,' the Queen intoned, 'you will step down after two terms in office in accordance with your constitution.' The opposition benches went wild and the Queen stopped, looking in bewilderment at the hullabaloo.
Afterwards, Robin Cook was furious. 'It's a disaster. Who the hell drafted that?'
'Er, I did, Secretary of State,' I said. 'I might have guessed! Who the hell approved it?' 'You did.' Cook's Private Secretary had to dig out the draft he had signed. After the State banquet, I retired to a hotel bar with the Royal Household. The senior staff had withdrawn to allow the butlers, footmen and hairdressers to let off steam.
The party appeared, to a man, to be gay. Not just gay, but outrageously camp. We'd taken the hotel for the Royal party, but allowed the British Airways crew to stay. Now three cabin stewards, two Royal footmen and a Royal hairdresser were grouped around the piano singing hits from Cabaret. I was seated on a sofa and across from me in an armchair was a member of the Household who seemed out of place. The valet looked to be in his 60s, a grizzled NCO with tufts of hair either side of a bald pate, a boxer's nose and tattoos on his arms.
He was smoking roll-ups. I turned to the old warrior and said: 'Don't you find all this a bit strange sometimes?' He lent forward, put his hand on my bare knee below the kilt I wore on ceremonial occasions and said: 'Listen, ducks. I was in the Navy for 30 years.' I think he was joking, but some things are too weird even for me. The lower reaches of the Royal Household are one of them.
One enjoyable aspect of our time in Ghana was the constant stream of visitors. Among them was Peter Hain, the Minister for Africa. Hain, a good footballer, agreed to play in a charity match between children from a community football scheme and the High Commission.
Unfortunately, the ground was hard and the opposition turned out to be super-fit professionals. After a heavy tackle, I went down. Result: a dislocated shoulder. I couldn't move my arm for eight weeks. Other visitors included Clare Short, at the time Secretary of State for International Development.
She was in Ghana to try to persuade it to join a debt relief scheme. At a dinner for her, a Minister had made a speech about how much Ghana had learnt from the British Empire. Short stood up and expostulated: 'The British Empire! Don't tell me about the British Empire. I know about British colonialism. My father was Irish and we know about British colonialism. I'll tell you what the British did to your country. They exploited it, that's what they did. They exploited it.' After a few moments of stunned silence, the dinner continued.
On another occasion we were joined by Bobby Charlton, who came to Ghana seeking support for England's bid to host the 2006 World Cup. He was still an astounding player at 60 and it was good of him to get on the pitch for a local community football programme. Nevertheless, I found Charlton disappointing. He was self-centred and ratty - one of those heroes you wish you hadn't met.
Conversely, Roger Moore, a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, was charming and suave, just as you would expect, with a fund of brilliant stories beginning with lines such as: 'One day, Frank, Dean, Tony and I decided to play a trick on Marilyn ... ' He was also well briefed about children's issues in Ghana and was prepared not just to do PR, but to get his hands dirty helping in refugee camps without a camera in sight.
I was less taken with Jamie Theakston.
The BBC were filming a wildlife programme in Ghana, looking at the endangered green turtle population near Ada. A group of young volunteers had accompanied the BBC team to help the newly-born turtles to reach the ocean. But one girl, in her mid-20s, had streams of mascara running down her cheeks. She claimed Theakston had just broken up with her - yet here he was, surrounded by young women, enjoying the adulation.
I had bigger concerns, however. Ghana's presidential and parliamentary elections were due in December 2000 and there were signs that its 11 million voters might be preparing for a change of government. Enthusiasm for politics was everywhere. Even in the meanest village, people gathered under the banyan tree listening to FM stations on a battered transistor and arguing about the coming change.
In the West, tired of our politicians' deceit, we no longer much value democracy. It is wonderful to see a people exercising for the first time their power over those who would govern them. Our job was to see the elections were free and fair, with Britain funding a £10 million programme for photo-ID cards to reduce electoral fraud. The exercise eradicated one million fake names.
Another practical new weapon was indelible ink: when somebody voted, their thumb was painted to stop them casting more than one vote. India was the only source of a truly permanent ink that could not be washed or rubbed off. I had also persuaded the Foreign Office to provide experts from the Electoral Reform Society. Further valuable additions were two British MPs, Roger Gale and Nigel Jones.
Rawlings's party, the National Democratic Congress ( NDC), put up the vice President, John Atta Mills, as its presidential candidate. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) fielded John Kufuor. There is a tribal element in Ghanaian politics: the Ewe people vote overwhelmingly NDC; the Ashanti overwhelmingly NPP.
It was clear the governing party would not abandon power easily. Alarmed that it would lose, it had the high court declare the ID cards illegal because they disenfranchised legitimate voters. But the ruling was to no avail - the people took over. Polling station officers decided they were going to use ID cards anyway.
When first- round votes on December 7 were tallied, Kufuor had 48.4 per cent against Atta Mills's 44.8 per cent. The opposition was heading for a small majority but, with no candidate exceeding 50 per cent, a run- off was required. Ghana's 30 or so FM stations were vital in bringing democracy, so it was no surprise that the NDC moved against them.
On the evening before the poll, I took Roger Gale and Nigel Jones to visit Joy FM, possibly Ghana's most influential station. We were sitting in the office when an armed posse of Rawlings's security men arrived, saying they were closing the station on the President's instructions.
‘Good evening,' I said. ‘I am Craig Murray, Deputy British High Commissioner, and these gentlemen are Mr Roger Gale MP and Mr Nigel Jones MP, members of the British Parliament.' Gale added: ' Obviously there has been some mistake.
I thought I heard you say that you were closing down the station, but we are here to visit our fellow democracy, Ghana, and democracies don't close down radio stations.' The goons left. Joy FM never was closed. However, the NDC started to think I was a part of their problem and they assigned a secret service team to follow me around.
As the second round on December 28 approached, we discovered a problem: not enough Indian ink. We had paid for more, but it had to be specially made and would not be ready until December 24. This was cutting it tight and action was needed. Chartering a private plane to set off from India on Christmas Eve was easier said than done. Whitehall was in festive mode and unlikely to sanction spending quickly, so I used the Embassy's budget to pay for it.
Ghana's government did not want the Indian ink to get in and I was concerned it would be delayed by customs officials. So on Christmas Day 2000, instead of eating turkey, I stood baking on the airport tarmac. When our plane taxied in, we unloaded the boxes of little ink bottles on to two trucks. I escorted these out of the VIP gateway, helped by a substantial tip to the guards.
The truck drivers then delivered the ink to regional centres for distribution to constituencies. This was a game being played for high stakes, with real danger of civil war.
Hotheads in the ruling party might claim electoral fraud and mount a military takeover. The Ashanti could also react violently to losing. Every embassy was updating evacuation plans. Around 1am, the results started to come in. There was a more or less consistent swing to the opposition candidate, John Kufuor. You could have cut the atmosphere with a knife.
The coolest man in Ghana that night was the wry, chain-smoking Electoral Commissioner, Kwadwo Afari- Gyan, who received constant threatening phone calls instructing him to fix the result. Each time, the Electoral Commissioner replied: ' The result will be what the result will be. I am just making sure it is fairly counted.' Then, taking his umpteenth call, he stiffened. He summoned me to listen: it was his wife. Soldiers had come to their bungalow, taking her and his children hostage and threatening to kill them if he did not deliver the ' right' result.
Kwadwo barked down the phone: ' Put their leader on.' ‘Listen you little *****,' he snarled. 'How dare you come to my house and threaten my wife and children. I am sitting here with the British Deputy High Commissioner and he knows what is happening. Now get out of my home before we have you thrown into jail!' The soldier said: ' Yes, sir; sorry, sir.' Kwadwo then told his wife not to worry and calmly returned to his work.
By 3am on the second night only two constituencies were still to declare. Even if every voter there went for Atta Mills, Kufuor could still not be beaten.
The opposition had won - an African country ... had shown that democratic change could be achieved peacefully. Kufuor's eight years as President saw economic growth of more than 70 per cent - the first prolonged period since independence when Ghana was not getting poorer. But Ghanaians chose to exercise their democratic right to change and earlier this month narrowly elected Atta Mills.
Ghana is the only country in Africa to achieve the democratic norm of power alternating peacefully between parties at successive uninterrupted elections.
As I look back on my involvement with Africa over 30 years, I remain most proud of helping Ghanaians to attain democracy. It is an example that sadly, the rest of the continent has so far done little to follow.
But Ghana remains there - a glimmer of hope, an example to others and a rebuke to cynics who claim democracy is not possible in Africa.

Are you sure that Kwame Nkrumah was a schoolboy in the US, when the name of Ghana was agreed upon to be the name of the future independent nation? Let me give you a little free education.
Kwame Nkrumah had by that time in history already become an internationally known personality in the global movement for the emancipation of all Black peoples from colonial oppression and dictatorship. Nkrumah, George Padmore DuBois, Azikiwe, Sylvester Williams and co. were the ones that Black people all over the world at the time looked up to in the fight to liberate Africa and the Black Diaspora from colonial tyranny.
It was probably because of this that Paa Grant agreed to poach him from abroad to come and help the struggle on the home front in the Gold Coast.
Then if as you yourself rightly say, the UGCC "met the Kings and elders of the country to think about a suitable name. Finally all of them agreed upon one name, GHANA, which was the name of our ancient empire", then how could the credit be given to Danquah alone, as the illiterate Professor is saying?
Another correction, it was not "JB Danquah and his men" as you wrongly put it. It was Paa Grant and his men. JB Danquah and all the others were simply invited by Paa Grant to be members of the UGCC which he Paa Grant had decided to form. The UP/NPP people have, ungrateful as they have always been, wickedly sidelined even Paa Grant for all that he did for this country and giving them the UP/NPP people, the opportunity to make themselves known as politicians.
Danquah and all his followers who later became UP/PP and now NPP are nonentities when it comes to the liberation struggle for African liberation. Nobody knows them outside Ghana, for any notable achievement. Perhaps they may on the other hand be known as the people who treacherously undermined the first Republic with foreign agents to overthrow the govt of the African of the millennium.
If as you sadly say, OYOKOBA must learn history and facts, then you are a classic example of the idiom that says the 'pot calling the pot black'. You know what I mean?

Slaves in some parts of the world form the currency of the country; in others they are the , beasts of burden and the machinery; often their lot is mercilessly hard. "The name Ghana is the not an original creation of Dr. Danquah. The name Ghana was the title that was given to the leaders of Ouagadougou – the old Gana Empire – Gana was their title, so it’s not an original creation. He could take credit if it was an original thing, but it’s not an original creation, so what is the fuss?” Mr. Acheampong said."
J.B. Danquah was the first author documenting the movement of the Akan from Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. He was also the first one to mention the movement of the Akan people from the old Gana empire into modern day Ghana and Ivory Coast.
CPPians of today are a bunch of hypocrites! It were people from within the party, who overthrew Nkrumah. When Nkrumah took all the key positions, leading members of the CPP were annoyed. So they teamed up with some of the UGCC to overthrow Nkrumah. Actually, most of my family members were born or influenced into the CPP (at least the older generation), but when something is wrong, I will not say its right. Finally, the death of the imprisoned Nana Kwame Kyeretwie (Dr. J.B. Danquah) almost turned the whole country against Nkrumah.
During the colonial days, Krobo Edusei (a very influential member and interior minister during the CPP administration) rented a room at one of our family houses in Kumasi. He was able to influence most of our family members into the CPP.
My late father, a trained engineer and member of the Institute of Engineers and Technicians in London, became the first secretary of Krobo Edusei (Propaganda secretary), he personally campaigned for him in "Sekyere-East". Once, even the colonial police searched our house to arrest Krobo Edusei. During these days, Nkrumah and other founding members of the CPP almost met daily at our family house. So this place more or less became their headquarters.
Nkrumah and his people became millionaires over night. Krobo Edusei was a poor drug seller, before his party came to power. The CPP was not all that strong in the country as a whole. The government had little authority, in particular in Asante. Nkrumah was a coward, who always used others to achieve his goals as soon as they were of no more use, he turned against them.
By the end of the second World War, Ghana was more advanced economically and socially than most other African countries. By 1945 Ghana had the best road system, a railway and a deep water harbour and had one of the hightest per capita incomes of all the countries on the continent. Ghana then had a sizable educated elite and a rising middle class of teachers, contractors and private businessmen. By the end of 1964 Ghana was completely bankrupt. The national foreign debt grew from 64 million dollars in 1957 to 524 million in 1959 and to 770 million in 1964. Moreover, while Nkrumah urged the ordinary people to tighten their belts, he and his ministers led a life of luxury, rode in huge cars and erected buildings in the main towns from funds received from corrupt deals and bribes.By the time of the coup his wealth had increased to a total of £2,322,000, whereas his lawful earnings from 1951 to 1966 amounted to only £134,000.While he continued to place funds in foreign banks from 1962, he made the holding of foreign accounts abroad illegal. He vigorously opposed all the regional groupings, saying they would be "just another form of balkanisation".He constantly quarreled with other African heads of state, the vast majority of who opposed his dream of his "United states of Africa" and feared Nkrumahs desire to become president of Africa.
He introduced the Preventive Dentention Act, which enabled him to arrest any person without a trial (any person that was suspected of opposing his government). He turned the whole country into one concentration camp of fear, insecurity and uncertainty. He even dismissed the Chief justice and other judges, who did not rule in his favour. He turned Ghana into a one party state and made himself president for life. He seized and occupied all the key positions within his party, therefore his own people teamed up with some members of UGCC to overthrow him (not the NPP with cooperation of the CIA, as the propaganda of nowadays wants us to believe).
Nkruamhs megalmonia and power-drunkness were the main cause for his downfall. He showered upon himself ridiculous titles such as "Showboy", "His essianic Dedication", "Osagyefo","Fount of Honour", etc. His megalmonia made him see himself as the man destined by God to become the first president of a united Africa. It also drove him to excessive use of the Preventive Detention Act and the use of spies on his own people. When the railway workers went on strike in 1961, Nkrumah ordered strike leaders and opposition politicians arrested under the Trade Union Act of 1958.While Nkrumah had organized strikes just a few years before, he now opposed industrial democracy because it conflicted with rapid industrial development.
The death in the confined cell of the higly respected Dr. Danquah in February 1965 turned more Ghanaians against Nkrumah than any other single episode. All classes of Ghanas population turned against Nkrumah. It was J.B. Danquah, who actually gave Ghana its name, presumbly personal research had done into finding out about the link between ancient Ghana Kingdom and the Akan. Unfortunately he fell out with Nkrumah and ended up dying in prison. This man should be one of the great names mentioned among Africans. In my opionion, Danquah made a great attempt to enlighten his fellow Ghanaians. His book "the Akan doctrine of God" was the first book dealing with ancient Akan history. He also wrote some other books in the Akan language to help children and young adults identify with and learn to read their own language.
It also must be noted, that it were mainly wealthy families from Asante, who enabled Nkrumah to finance his nationwide boykotts.
If Nkrumah was still alive, he would behave like Gaddafi and their likes. In fact, Robert Mugabe (married to a Ghanaian) and many others were all trained by Nkrumah in Ghana. They received huge financial and even millitary support.
If it was not for Asante and the Asantehene Nana Agyeman Prempeh II the British would have never gained independence to then Gold Coast. Asante could have cared less, since its confiscated lands had been already releazed in the early 30s with the full restoration of Asanteman in 1935. It was then the Asantehene who pleaded for the then Gold Coast colony council and Asanteman council to merge to represent the interest of both the people in Asante and the Goldcoast. Your Nkrumah even offered the Asantehene to become the supreme chief of Ghana, what he rightly rejected. Knowing the opportunist Nkrumah was.
If people really believe Nkrumah was such a hero, then they should name the entire country after him. Why are you using the name "Ghana", a name that was based on the historical research of the late Dr. J.B. Danquah? CPPians of today are true chickens, where ever you throw the corn they will follow. No wonder, they chose that animal as embodiment of their party.

Ashantis are known backward people, they believe in Human sacrifice an indulgence in 16 century like British football derby.
The City of Death known as Kum asi human sacrifice in a satanic ritual is no myth
There was the stench of Satanism about the City of Death. It has all the ingredients of ritual satanic bestiality to the highest hell which prompted an expedition taken solely in the interests of the Gold Coast Colony, and at the request, often repeated, of the inhabitants along the coastal line. Both they and the Government of the Fort Seafarers considered that steps must be taken to suppress what was neither more nor less than an intolerable and injurious nuisance of City of Death. The government of the Chief of the City of Death had, ever since 1874, stood in the way of civilisation, of trade, and of the interests of the people themselves, and should, on these general grounds alone, be made to put a stop to it.
Actually the date of the war in 1873 and 1874 of this part of Africa is extremely rich, certainly rich in natural resources, probably rich in mineral resources,—has been devastated, destroyed, and ruined by inter-tribal disputes, and especially by the evil government of the authorities of the City of Death. No sooner was the present ruler installed as king of that country than he began to make war upon every tribe in the neighbourhood, and the consequent loss of life was very great. What is the state of things in City of Death and in many other of these West African and African possessions? The people are not a bad people. The natives are, on the whole, perfectly willing to work, and if they fight, they fight because they cannot help themselves. They would always rather settle down to commercial or agricultural pursuits if they were allowed to do so, but in such cases as should be the normal case, the government was so atrociously bad that they were not allowed to do so. No man was safe in the enjoyment of his own property, and as long as that is the case, no one has any inducement to work.
Action was taken against the City of Death regime, as there exist more particular reasons for it in the refusal of their Chief to carry out the provisions of the treaty of 1874 to put a stop to the human sacrifices. In the City of Death the abuse had been allowed to go on far too long.
Slaves in some parts of the world form the currency of the country; in others they are the , beasts of burden and the machinery; often their lot is mercilessly hard. But in no part of the world does slavery appear to be more detestable than in the City of Death. They were not required for currency, since gold dust was the medium there. Nor are they required to any considerable extent as labourers, since the City of Death lives merely on vegetables, which want little or no cultivation. And yet there is a strong demand for slaves. They are wanted for human sacrifice. The human sacrifice can't be stopped , as it will deal a fatal blow to the slave trade, while it renders raiding an unprofitable game. Up till the time of the expedition raiding had been carried on systematically in direct contravention of any treaty. The expedition was necessary also for the protection of other tribes. Every tribe in the neighbourhood of the City of Death lived in terror of its life from the so called king, who had on several occasions destroyed, one after another, tribes which had sought the fort seafarers protection. There were at least half a dozen separate tribes under separate chieftains who had been driven out of their country of City of Death and to a large extent destroyed, the whole trade and commerce being utterly ruined in consequence of the continued raids, made against the representations of the Fort Seafarers authorities, by the King of the City of Death. In order to prevent that, from time to time the Fort Seafarers Government took some of the tribes under its protection. Great mistake was made in refusing sooner to take under the fort masters protection tribes that asked that protection merely in order that they might engage in peaceful commerce, always with the result that the tribes were immediately afterwards eaten up by the tribe of the City of Death.
In the first place, the city means “the Death-Place” in their local name.
The town possessed no less than three places of execution; one, for private executions, was at the palace; a second, for public decapitations, was on the parade-ground; a third, for fetish sacrifices, was in the sacred village of where the kings are buried.
Close to the parade ground was the grove into which the remains of the victims were flung, and which very aptly was known as “Golgotha” to the members of the force. The ground there was found covered with skulls and bones of thousands of victims. At the kings burial village was the celebrated execution bowl, which was fully described by, Bowdich in his account of “the Death-Place” in 1817. It is a large brass basin some five feet in diameter. It is ornamented with four small lions, and a number of round knobs all round its rim, except at one part, where there is a space for the victim's neck to rest on the edge. The blood of the victims was allowed to putrefy in the bowl, and leaves of certain herbs being added, it was considered a very valuable fetish medicine. The bowl and the symbol of the king's authority have now been brought to England.
Then in the Death-Place are two blocks of houses occupied entirely by the executioners-one being assigned to the sacrificial, the other to the criminal executioners. Among the loot taken in the houses of King and of his chiefs were several “blood stools,” or stools which had been used as blocks for executions, and which bore very visible signs of having been so used. In these notes, be it remembered, we are only dealing with the City of Death, but every king—and there were some half a dozen of them in the City of Death empire—had powers of life and death over his subjects, and carried out his human sacrifices on a major scale in his own capital.
In fact, one sub ex-king was deposed on account of his over-indulgence in that form of amusement.
Any great public function was seized on as an excuse for human sacrifices. There was the annual harvest festival, at which large numbers of victims were often offered to the gods. Then the king went every quarter to pay his devotions to the shades of his ancestors at burial place, and this demanded the deaths of hundreds of men over the great bowl on each occasion. On the death of any great personage, twenty of the household slaves were at once killed on the threshold of the door, in order to attend their master immediately in his new life, and his grave was afterwards lined with the bodies of more slaves who were to form his retinue in the spirit world. It was thought all the better if, during the burial, one of the attendant mourners could be stunned by a club, and dropped, still breathing, into the grave before it was filled in. In the case of a great lady dying, slave-girls about twenty were the victims. This custom of sacrifice at funerals was called “washing the grave.” On the death of a king the custom of washing the grave involved enormous sacrifices. Then sacrifices were also made to propitiate the gods when war was about to be entered upon, or other trouble was impending. Victims were also killed to deter an enemy from approaching the capital: sometimes they were impaled and set up on the path, with their hand pointing to the enemy and bidding him to retire. At other times the victim was beheaded and the head replaced looking in the wrong direction; or he was buried alive in the pathway, standing upright, with only his head above ground, to remain thus until starvation, or—what was infinitely worse—the ants made an end of them.
Indeed, if the king desired an execution at any time, he did not look far for an excuse. It is even said that on one occasion he preferred a richer colour in the red stucco on the walls of the palace, and that for this purpose the blood of four hundred virgins was used. The victims of sacrifices were almost always slaves or prisoners of war. Slaves were often sent in to the king in lieu of tribute from his kinglet's and chiefs, or as a fine for minor delinquencies. Travelling traders of other tribes, too, were frequently called upon to pay customs dues with a slaves about five or ten, and sometimes their own lives were forfeited.
When once a man had been selected and seized for execution, there were only two ways by which he could evade it. One was to repeat the “king's oath”—a certain formula of words—before they could gag him; the other was to break loose from his captors and run as far as the Burial Place-Death Place cross road; if he could reach this point before being overtaken, he was allowed to go free. In order to ensure against their prisoners getting off by either of these methods, the executioners used to spring on the intended victim from behind, and while one bound his hands behind his back, another drove a knife through both his cheeks, which effectually prevented him from opening his mouth to speak, and in this horrible condition he had to await his turn for execution. When the time came, the executioners, mad with blood, would make a rush for him and force him on to the bowl or stool, whichever served as the block. Then one of them, using a large kind of butcher's knife, would cut into the spine, and so carve the head off. As a rule, the victims were killed without extra torture, but if the order was given for an addition of this kind, the executioners vied with each other in devising original and fiendish forms of suffering. At great executions torture was apparently resorted to in order to please the spectators. It certainly seems that the people had by frequent indulgence become imbued with a kind of blood-lust, and that to them an execution was as attractive an entertainment as is a bull-fight to a Spaniard or a football match to an Englishman.
This custom is one which a clause in the treaty of 1874 stipulated was to cease, but the contract was never carried out by the kings. In spite of their promises, sacrifices went on up till the time of the expedition, conquest and arrest of the king and all the chiefs. It was even said that an execution came off at the palace the day after the fort masters arrival in the Death-Place.
But to this day has the human sacrifice stop, the custom of sacrifice at funerals “washing the grave.” on the death of the king? About a decade at the helm of affairs until miraculously defeated gave us a little of what is known of “The Death Place” intolerable and injurious nuisance and acts of cruelty and barbarism.

Stop your deliberate denigration of Ashantis and Akyems. It does not help our discourse for Ghana's better way forward.
You know as well as I do that every single Tribe or Race on Earth was once primitive, backward, uncivilized by current standards. However, in days they did not view themselves as such. From the Anglo-Saxons to the Shangs, from the Hindus to the Vikings, from the Assyrians to the Aztecs, from the Wangaras to the Somalis, etc., human history is replete with inhuman treatment of various groups by others.
In Ghana, non-Christian worshiping was found among all Tribes, Ewes, Ashantis, Gas, Gonjas, Walas, etc. and human and animal sacrifices were everywhere. Even today, we cannot claim to have completely supplanted those traditional religions among us, your area included. So, you and the rest of us are all intimately wrapped in that so-called uncivilized way of life. It is therefore not only the Ashantis who might have done anything barbaric. In fact, the word barbaric came from how the Romans viewed the Gothics and others to their North and East, calling the latter Barbarians.
Yet, the Romans themselves were not innocent of inhuman, grotesque behavior. The needless bloody Roman sport that the Gladiators engaged in could not be any more civilized than any such human cruelty elsewhere in the World.
Be real. Be honest. stop the thinly-veiled ethnic bashing.
Long live Ghana!!!

The ancient people were able to know and do things, we cannot even understand and do with our modern day technology. The Dogons of Mali had been able to know so many details about our solar system and certain stars 1000 of years ago. Some of these stars had only been discovered in recent times and are not visible to the naked eye. The Lalibela underground church in Lalibela (Ethiopia), the pyramids in South America/Egypt, Pumapunku etc. all those things were built with such a precision, accuracy and mathematically aligned to certain stars. We would even have big difficulties to do that today.
Asantes and Akyems are not tribes, but Akan states. The first euopreans entering Asante (in particular the British) touted the Asantes as one of the most civilized places they had come across on the continent. Indeed they were shocked to see nicely developed towns and city states with a highly sophisticated system of governance as well as social formation and judicial system.
"In Ghana, non-Christian worshiping was found among all Tribes"
So what? Occultism or Idol worship does not exist, its just a derogatory term, to deny the fact, that we had a highly sophisticated and native religion before the coming of the Europeans.
How dare people to describe any other religion than Christianity as demonic? Is Buddhism demonic? Is Daoism demonic? Is Hindusim demonic? Is Judaism demonic? If not, why are they considering African religions or ancient indigenous beliefs in general as demonic? I wonder when Christians will stop claiming hegemony over all other religions.
Christians do make sacrifices, during any holy communion they are drinking the blood of Jesus Christ. The Latin word sacrificium, ‘sacrifice’, is derived from sacrum facere, "to make holy". In Catholic liturgy, to make something holy is to set it apart by "consecration". The Christians use this word for the central moment of the Mass when the priest says the words of Jesus Christ at the Last Supper over the bread and wine in front of an altar. There do exist various occult symbols and items, on top of it the legend of the holy grail. Christianity its by his history one of the cruelest religions. How many people have died in the name of Christ, Christianity and Catholicism? Thousands and millions were killed, who refused to accept Christianity and their holy places being destroyed.Entire cities had been wiped out in the name of Christianity. Not to mention the numerous religious wars i.e. Catholic extermination camps,Catholic terror in Vietnam,Rwanda Massacres (where the catholic church had been actively involved) of course it does not end there, it goes on with the killings of Indians in South America etc.
Degenerating African religions saying its backward and babaric is far from the truth. Its very sophisticated, if you take the time to analyze it.Trying to push away African spirituality without making an effort to understand it, will surely lead you astray. There are different religons in the world with different ways how to get close to God and our creator force. One cannot say one faith system is better or even superior to another. We all have a right to practise and follow what we believe in and what appeals to us. The Akans came to the present day area of Ghana, because they refused to accept Islam and did not want to engage in constant warefare with those who were trying to impose it upon them. They didnt come to Ghana to be forced into Christianity. If one wants to follow a foreign religion, let him/her do so. But they should not condem indigenous religious beliefs out of ignorance.
If one really has a problem with his/her own culture, then he must stop practising it! That person must stop in performing Akan naming ceremonies, stop conducting funerals in the Akan fashion, stop pouring libation, stop engaging in Akan festivals such as Akwasidae, stop the practise of customary marriages, even stop bearing an Akan soul/day names, since they have a spiritual connection to the cosmology of the Akan people. They must also avoid praising Nyame/Nyankopon since this is how the Akans referred to their creator. They must stop practising all aspects of their culture. One cannot say I embrace my culture, but I reject the spiritual aspect of it. This is not possible, one does not exist without the other.
Upon all those stolen religious culture and civilization of us, they (the western world) still give us the impression, they are the civilized ones, even though, they are still living at the expense of our civilization just under a different name, believing we will ever remain blind to discover their conspiracies. They still want us to believe that they are the makers of what our fore-parents have already created for us many centuries before.

You say Danquah did some kind of research ostensibly to discover the name Ghana? Are you serious? What school did you go to? Did you not study basic elementary history? Everybody with basic primary education in this country or Africa knows that there was an ancient kingdom called Ghana. This had been established many centuries ago. Nobody needs any research to know this. I am afraid if Danquah had to do research to find this out, then he wasted his own time.

"You say Danquah did some kind of research ostensibly to discover the name Ghana?"
No, I didnt say, he discovered the kingdom of Ghana. It is rather he who traced the people living in that area and their culture, which were predominantly Akan. By the way, his research goes far beyond the area of the ancient kingdom of Gana. I advise you to read his book "the Akan doctrine of God" as well as some books of recent Akan scholars such as Akanba (Martin Abrokwa)-Revelation: the movement of the Akan people from Kanaan to Ghana, Daniel Oduro-Akanism and Hebrewism etc.
"What school did you go to?"
I attended University of Kassel in Germany. I studied Economics and Management with concentration in "International Management & Marketing" and "Private & Public Management".

This Kobby merely is looking for attention after he was booted from office for his uncouth behavior at the Internal Affairs ministry under Mills. The fact that one initiated something does not mean he is the one who implemented it. The colonial masters had the Bui dam sketches made, but after successive governments including almost 20 years of misrule by NDC, it took Kuffour to implement it, so who gets the credit? If our ancestors in the Upper Volta had that in mind at the time they were in Oaugadogu it was J.B.Dankwah and the big 6 who made sure that Ghana attains independence by that name Ghana (Gana as you put it).

70-year-old Mike went for his annual physical. All of his tests came back with normal results. Dr Arthur Kennedy said, "Mike, everything looks great physically. How are you doing mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with yourself, and do you have a good relationship with your God as you keep lying about Nkrumah?"
Mike replied, "God and me are tight He knows I have poor eyesight, so he's fixed it so that when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom (poof!) the light goes on when I pee, and then (poof!) the light goes off when I'm done."
"Wow," commented Dr. Kennedy, "that's incredible!"
A little later in the day Dr. Kennedy called Mikes's wife. "Ursula," he said, "Mike is just fine. Physically he's great. But I had to call because I'm in awe of his relationship with God.
Is it true that he gets up during the night and (poof!) the light goes on in the bathroom, and then (poof!) the light goes off?"
Ursula exclaimed, "That old fool! He's peeing in the refrigerator again!"

If Kobby Acheampong had not argued this way I wouldn't have known how stupid he is. What is this argument about name creation? All that Prof said was: It was J.B. Dankwa who envisioned the need for the present descendants who had migrated from the Northern part of West Africa to identify ourselves with our ancestral roots and call the country Ghana instead of Gold Coast. Of course Dankwa himself and everyone else who knew history was already aware of the essence of 'Ghana'so Kobby cannot lecture us here.
Nkrumah was a great man and led the people to independence. Leading a country to achieve independence is NOT the same as founding the country. Was it Mandela who founded South Africa, simply because he led them to independence? After all, the people must exist as a collective body before they can fight for independence. Therefore Nkrumah CANNOT be said to be the founder. If anything at all, it was the one who advocated common national identity that deserves to be called the founder.

NPP can have the name Ghana for all we care! We will still live up to the Nkrumahist vision of one country, one people, and one destiny. And if Ocquaye thinks organizing the masses is "brawn" work, he betrays his abysmal poverty of intellect. In any case no institutions anywhere in the world, true centres of intellectual discourse and development, are going gaga over Danquah's alleged "intellectual" prowess.

Dr. Aquay, we hear you perfectly right! But if these mentioned prominent names and deeds became vain it's because they ended up sabotaging the very good works they were part of initially. Had the "UP" opposition succeed, Ghana's independence would have been chaotic and pushed forward indefinitely by the British who never want to let go of the Nation which supports the Monarchy. And trust me African as a whole will have been thrown into deeper dependency till date! Such people deserve no credit. Perhaps they (the UP organizers) earned their happy meal for the sabotage and were satisfied. We can't praise them today for such ill behaviours. Today I believe there are people of that nature in our politics but with a twist because Ghanaians are wiser than ever and therefore can avoid or stop their snares on track. And this is why the confidence of Ghana is seen across the world as a nation which is most likely not to fail.

The UGCC was not an exclusive creation of Danquah, or his brain-child. So, why does the all-knowing Prof. not include Mensah Sarbah, Paa Grant and others who pushed for such organization in the sharing of the glory? Singling J. B. Danquah for an honor greater than everyone else, as a counter to Nkrumah's fame only deepens the rift between the NLM/UPs and the CPPs.
Meanwhile, the UGCC gave birth not only to the UP but also the CPP, since Nkrumah was part of the UGCC before breaking out.
Professor Oquaye cannot win this argument from any angle. His membership in the UP tradition is even suspected to be rooted in his affiliation with the Ga Tokyo-Joes.
We do not need this escalation of "we are better than you" crap.
Let Danquah be duly recognized and honored. But that should not preclude any contributions others, including Nkrumah, made for our freedom. Many and I have always criticized certain Nkrumahists for totally denying Danquah of his deserving credits. But Mike Oquaye should not repeat their mistakes to claim anything more than has been duly established.

This is not the first time I have heard that J. B. Danquah proposed the name Ghana to replace the G. Coast. I have heard it from an old man before. He is about 94 years now. Ghana was an ancient Mali or Shonghai empire in the middle of Africa which fell. People were there before our Hon. former president Kwame Nkrumah, people worked with him. People like Ako Adjei, Paa Grant, King Ghartey of Winneba among others. Look at people like Sgt. Attipoe, Sgt. Adjetey and the other who were shot at the cross-roads in their fight for independence; these were all people who were fighting for independence before our dear Nkrumah was invited down to come and support the fight. So let us try and learn. It would have been proper to go and research rather condemn. It will not take us anywhere. Please.
