DUAL CITIZENSHIP: Processing Started In Washington Mission

With effect from December 1, 2002, the Embassy of Ghana in Washington D.C. begun processing applications for Dual Citizenship in accordance with the Citizenship Act 2002 (Act 591).

Ghanaians, who have acquired US citizenship, are eligible to apply for the dual citizenship.

Applicants are required to complete a Dual Citizenship application form, which costs $80.00 and pay an additional sum of $20.00 for the issuance of the certificate. An application is also to be accompanied by six passport size photographs, evidence of U.S citizenship (e.g. American passport, certificate of citizenship) and an evidence of Ghanaian nationality, i.e.

  • Parent’s nationality
  • Birth certificate
  • Voter’s ID card
  • Ghana passport
Application forms can be obtained from the Embassy in Washington D.C., Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and will soon be available at the Honorary Consulate of Ghana in Houston.

All applications will be forwarded to the Ministry of Interior in Accra for final processing and issuance of the Dual Citizenship Certificate. On acquiring the dual citizenship, a holder will be entitled to apply for Ghanaian passport in addition to their US passport.

A holder of dual citizenship will be permitted to remain in Ghana without limitation if the person entered the country on a Ghanaian passport. It is an offence however, for a dual citizenship holder to use two passports interchangeably to deceive an immigration officer.
