"Illegal Strike"?! What does the racist South African bosses know about ILLEGALITY?! They flout all the labour and tax laws in Ghana, refuse to pay legitimate severance/redundancy payments and rather dismiss people and get away with this in this country. They pay Ghanaians abysmally and pay their expatriates in Ghana with no work / resident permits 3x what their Ghanaian counterparts who actually does all the work takes, and they turn around to talk about ILLEGALITIES. It is ONLY in Ghana. Strike on and let the right things be done by this particular multinational. If Gold Fields international shareholders know what GF does in Ghana they would have a say about it.

By the way who signed those deal with the Gold Fields. Can't that Agreement be revised. SO CAN'T GHANA GOVERNMENT HAVE ITS OWN GOLD MINES, WITH GHANAIAN EXPERTISE, GHANAIAN ENGINEERS, GHANAIAN ADMISTATORS? Sometimes "cry" when I read such things. So the Government want to say that Ghana cannot have its own Gold Mines??

You are right but we as Ghanaians too need to take a look at our selves.Bogus immigration officials allow people without qualifications to work in Ghana. Even if you bring Ghanaian with experience for those positions we pull them down PHD syndrome, so the foreign companies get away with murder. It is not only Goldfields but all the mining companies in Ghana.

I have not got the full facts of the matter but the little I can work out is we have let ourselves into this problem. These multinational companies will exploit given the chance and they are not in to operating a charity. We have have given them the power to operate freely without limit. They flout every single law of the land with impunity. Foreign nationals work without visas, properly vetted qualifications and on top of it all, earn several times what a Ghanaian would doing the same job.
It is the job of goverment/ state institutions to ensure multinational operate within the laws. Unfortunately for us these institutions are infested with hard core corrupt staff allowing these firms to take advantage.
The key questions are:
What percentage of expatriates are allowed by foreign firms to have?
Are job vacancies advertised nationally before inviting international applicants.
Are expatriates vetted to ensure the qualification they have is legitimate by both the firm and the state? And what are the penalties should they flout these rules?
