WOYOME , SADA, GYEEDA, ASOFOTON, CP and the other criminal schemes perpetuated by this criminal enterprise of a govt are the real issues.
Before the unfortunate event of voting these fools to power, it did cost about 12 cents per minute to call Ghana and the rate was coming down.
When they came to power, they increased the tarrifs and it now costs about 23 cents to call Ghana.
Nigeria has the same telecom infrastructure as Ghana and it costs about 5 cents to call there

It was a complete economic nonsense for the government to have fixed a minimum rate for international calls (calls originating from out of Ghana). The idea that government would make more money by increasing rates for these calls was foolish. It appears as if no one is thinking in the NDC government. I clocked $250 a month for calls to family and friends in Ghana in 2008 when rates were 6 cents a minute (my provider was a company called USC 2000). After the introduction of the so-called minimum rate of 25 cents a minute (a 400% increase), I was down to $30 - 35 a month, limiting calls to emergencies only. That is how economics works. Remove the stupid minimum rates and leave it to competition and monitor the calls. That way, people make more calls and do more business. This is how the developed countries make their money.

The current and past governments have no better ideas to create viable businesses to generate revenue.
Rather, the cheapest and the dumbest way to do so is by inflicting pain on its own citizens, especially those abroad.
The two most outstanding exploitations are:
* Outrageous import duties, taxes and fees levied on personal effects shipped into the country by ghanaian immigrants in diaspora
* Excessive telephone call rates for calls coming to Ghana
If you should click on the 'Country' tab on GhanaWeb homepage you will find this statement in the middle of the page;
"Economy relies heavily on foreign assistance and remittances from Ghanaians abroad"
Unfortunately, the government does not seem to appreciate the contributions by these immigrants.
Instead, the govt continue to relish untold hardship and suck blood form its own people.
The consequences are that human beings being human beings, will find a way to 'mitigate the pain'. This is the result of what the country is witnessing.- adverse effect.
Not until the govermenent comes to his senses and make it more attractive for ghanaians in diaspora to find reasons to continue to invest in the country,Ghana will continue to suffer.
The bulk of the country revenue, around two billion dollars every year is contributed by ghanaians living abroad.
I believe lately, that number is declining because it's no longer profitable to do business in the country or even send large amounts of money.
The exchange rate is getting worse by the hour and it's a no-brainer, immigrants would like to hold on to their hard earned dollars at this time.
I personally sold a dollar for 3 cedis on July 5, on August 12, one dollar was going for 3.8 cedis. I heard it was even 4 cedis in other forex bureau in Accra around the same time.
Even the smart ghanaians are converting their cedis to dollars for keeps, as it just makes more business sense than to risk engaging in any kind of trading that involves importation of goods.
If the Ghana government think they have no other ideas to generate revenue but to "chew its own tongue" let them go ahead and continue to pounce on its own people.
Ghanaians abroad are getting technologically savvy, most people now use VIBER, WHATSAPP, SKYPE , computer-to-computer calls via Google and any other means available to avert the outrageous fees.
The government has not seen anything yet. The revenue situation will get worse until they wise up and remove the stupid 'minimum' call rate.
Sometimes you wonder if our leaders learned anything from school. This should be economics 101.
