Deaf and dumb man accused of defilement

Tema, July 24, GNA - Akwetey Sakora, a deaf and dumb man charged with defiling a nine year old girl, has been granted an 80 million cedis bail with two sureties by the Tema Circuit Court 'B'.

Sakora, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement and was in tears, would reappear on August 07.

Police Chief Inspector Edith Nutakor told the court that Sakora, who stays with the wife in the same house as victim and her parents, sent the nine-year-old girl on May 14 to buy him some biscuits. On her return Sakora lured her into his room and forcibly defiled her.

Three days later her mother noticed she was limping and complained of abdominal pain but when she asked the daughter if she had been defiled the replied in the negative. The victim however narrated her ordeal to the mother when she (the mother) told her of her intention to send her to the hospital. Victim's mother reported the case to the Ashaiman police and Sakora was arrested.

The court hired a deaf and dumb instructor to translate the proceedings to the accused.
