Hardened criminal breaks jail again from Tamale Prisons

Tamale, Jan. 14, GNA - A hardened criminal, Johson Kombia alias "Boga", who once broke jail in 2005 and is standing trial for robbery and attempted murder, had once again escaped from the Tamale Regional Prisons.

Information reaching the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicates that Kombia's escape occurred at about 0400 hours on Friday, January 15, 2010. Until his escape, the hardened criminal, was said to have been bounded in chains on the leg in a separate cell under the guard of prison officers. He was alleged to have escape by climbing a water tanker which enabled him to scale over the walls of the prisons. Prison Officers at the Northern Regional Prisons Command refused to talk on the matter when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) went to the place that Friday.

Meanwhile, the GNA learnt that the Regional Commander for the Tamale Prisons, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP), Philip Laari was holding emergency meeting with staff on the matter.

Sources that pleaded anonymity said the chains on Kombia's leg were later seen to have been loosened.

When the GNA later contacted the Northern Regional Police, they confirmed the story and said investigation was ongoing.
