Convict gets additional three years for prison escape

Kumasi, June 28, GNA - A 25-year old convict, serving a three-year jail term, has received additional three years sentence for escaping from prison custody.

John Anane pleaded guilty to the offence.

Police Chief Inspector Isaac Mensah Apenteng told the KMA Circuit Court presided over by Justice William Boampong that Anane is a prisoner at the Amanfrom Camp Prison, near Kumasi.

On May 23, he together with two other serving convicts, were sent to provide labour on a building project.

The prosecution said after the close of work Anane took a shovel, pretended he was cleaning it and when he became convinced that nobody was watching him, escaped.

The prison officer, who escorted them to the project site, made a report to his superiors and a search was mounted for him.

Police Chief Inspector Mensah said the prison authorities on June 8 received information that Annan had been arrested by the Police in Sunyani for alleged murder.
