Because they chose the left-wing marxist route.Instead of following the examples of Singapore , Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, etc, they chose countries like Cuba and the other marxist countries to role model themselves. The experiment failed badly. We now a poor country trying to blame our failures on European colonialism.By the way British rule in Ghana lasted less than a 100 yrs and not 500 yrs.
