It is disingenuous to refer to chiefs in Ghana as kings. There are no kingdoms in Ghana; therefore, there are no kings in Ghana. By the way, when is this kente festival being held and why is it that Ghanaian associations have the knack of inviting some local politician to grace their function? Is this a way of gaining legitimacy?

It is true that now, we no longer have kings in Ghana but sub-chiefs, chiefs and paramount chiefs. However, in the past, there were Kingdoms, and therefore, Kings, within our our empires. For example, the great ancient Ghana Empire contained kingdoms including the Asante kingdom, and the Asante King.
But those ancient times have passed and present-day Ghana no longer has "kings". The author of the article makes it clear in paragraph 6 that "In the olden days, [the kentes] were worn by the kings, queens, rich and highly respected people but now everyone can wear [them]". The author is referring to the past, and, therefore, uses the past tense. I cannot find anything disingenuous about that.
