A million dollar question to you is would you have written this piece if the NPP was in power? Hmmmm, you are just confirming the usual suspicion that many ordinary Ghanaians have for the NPP. You also last wrote that Akans in the NDC are betrayers. What of the non Akans in the NPP? Are they animals? What would you say of Jake Lamptey, Dr Bawumiah etc? Is this the type of democracy practiced in the UK where you live?
When the going gets tough all some of them is to only hide behind tribalism. But we thank God Ghana is becoming very cosmopolitan and its only a matter of time before your kind dies out.

The type of society your kinds dream of is how America used to be. Thank God Martin Luther King and co gave up their lives to change America otherwise your type, background, and skin color wouldn't even have the opportunity to teach in a high school even with your PHD.
Remember the world is coming together not moving apart, we are building a united Ghana not a United Akan land. All the same we thank God majority of Akans do not see the world the way you see it. And you will forever remain frustrated because in your view and also according to the summary of Adofo's article he cant possibly understand why all Akans and especially Asantes do not see things the way he sees it.
The sad truth is it would never happen today, tomorrow, or forever. Even among the Ewes we accuse of voting en-block there are still some who would never vote NDC. You cannot get a 100% to reason like you.

However if other tribes, out of envy or whatever reason think they should destroy prople of Ashanti origin who are successful as was done to BA Mensah and Appia Minka, Addison and those other Akan industrialists whose businesses were collapsed for no apparent reason, then it stands to reason that we recognise this treacherous agenda and fight it collectively as a group or be subjugated in our own land. Read the comments in this forum and you will hear people referring to Ashantis as Kookoase people and our sons as shoe shine boys and illiterates. So for Gods sake, what is wrong in advocating free SHS education for all Ghanaians in order to reduce the episode of school drop-outs in Ghana?. Particularly when such a policy has been enjoyed by people of Northern descent and continues to be enjoyed by them. I bet they will resist with tooth and nails if a government decides to remove that priviledge. Only for them to turn and insult the people whose resources and wealth made it possible for them to enjot such previleges. We would be rather naive thinking of the ideal when the people we are dealing with are thinking otherwise. Ideally Ghana is one and we should forge ahead as one. But if others think that, some people called Ashantis are "too pround" and must therefore be "cut to size" then we will be fooling ourselves as Akans and behaving like ostritches hiding our heads in the sand while our enemies destroy us. I got the shock of my life the last time I visited Ghana and was travelling by road to Kumasi when I saw that, the Kumasi road portion not completed by Kuffour has now become a death trap after four years of NDC administration. That they couldn't find the money to finish the road which by they way is also used by the Northerners travelling up north as well as the haullage trucks moving up to Bukina Faso, But could find enough money to pay questionable judgement debts to croonies like the Woyomeys and CP's. And that they are now concentrating on the easter corridor road through the Volta to the North when almost complted roads through Nsawam to the north is left to rot. If this is not a deliberate agenda to sugjugate Ashantis for their perceived arrogance, then what can it be. Today we talk of SADA and Akomfem investments in the north and pumps millions into private sector afforestation projects which plants trees in the dry season only for them to die and have six-eggs to show for Akonfem investments for all the money sunk. Is this not just surrogates for enriching Northern businesmen from state coffers rather than they getting rich through their own ingenuity. Today every Government computer supply contract goes to Agambire. I agree with Adofo, that unless the Akans as a whole or Ashantis in particular wake up to this diabilical agenda, our enermies will succeed. Awoonor was a member of the council of state and he has made no secret of the Agenda his party is pursuing. So why will others be branded tribalistic when they try to raise awareness for the need to unearth and fight against this wicked agenda. I always read with amusement when NDC people brand Ashantis and Akyems as tribalistic. Go to the work place and meet an Ashanti or Akyem boss and introduce yourself as his kinsman. And you will be shocked the response you receive - Who cares. But let a Nyebro man/woman meet his fellow Nyebro in the work place as boss or anywhere else, and instantly they click and sideline everyone else. These same people are branding other people as tribalistic today. Wonders they say will never end. We all love Ghana, Ashantis, Ewes, Gas or Northerners, but unless we allow equity and justice and respect for success through hard work to prevail in our dealings with each other and in the sharing of the national cake, we will not be able to build the Ghana we all dream of. Telling It As It Is: The PP/NPP’s Tradition of Tribal Politics

Here is the other post from the archives. It should be an eye opener to all those who are claiming that tribal politics started under Rawlings and the PNDC. For others, it should reveal to them the origins of the ethnic foment and ethnic politics in Ghana under the NLC and then under the PP regime. It is that tradition that continues today, with the sympathisers of the NPP with Akan backgrounds being the main culprits.
I wrote the piece in response to Prof. George Ayittey, a major exponent of tribalistic analysis of politics in Africa. He failed to write a response though, since he has none. What I wrote then is still very relevant today and on this forum too. I’ve slightly edited it.
Incidentally, it was this very post Gamal Nkrumah took exception to, as he wrongly thought I was referring to him when I wrote “incestuous Egyptians”. I found out and explained to him that he and present Egyptians were far from my mind, as I was referring to the ancient and real Kemetians. Kofi Ellison, you get this straight, as you’ve been wrongly referring to this from an unknown source who told you I had a clash with Gamal.

Secondly, whatever ethnic tensions are there are not due to Rawlings' doing. Rather, it is the doing of some bankrupt and jaded politicians who have been arousing ethnic hatred against Rawlings mother's ethnic group members, the Ewes, as a political tool to gain power. So far, it has failed resoundingly. In fact, it has backfired so badly the culprits, found mainly in the NPP, which George also belongs to, are now openly writing and saying that they had to reassess their strategy.
The issue is not a "public perception," shared by a majority of Ghanaians. The "perception" is insidiously and virulently promoted by a narrow group of Ghanaians, of whom George indeed is one of them. He clearly and unambiguously promoted this in a mail he posted on Okyeame sometime ago. As to be expected, I took him on and referred him to the English Sociologist, Charles Elliott's book (1975). A great comparative study of poverty and its causes in some "Third World" countries, it presented statistics on the ethnic distribution in different occupations, including the public services in Ghana too. As I told George, the figures show that by 1975, his own ethnic group, the Gas, proportionately have more of their people in higher govt. positions than any other ethnic group in Ghana! I wanted to know whether that has changed since Rawlings assumed office again on 31 Dec., 1981, less than a day to 1982. As to be expected no answer came from him.
Of course, I am aware of newer researches, as that of Richard Jefferies, African Affairs, 92. 331-399:1993, which clearly state that Rawlings has not packed higher offices with Ewes since his second coming to power. (BTW, same accusations were made during his brief first coming of 3 months too). What anyone having the pretensions to being a scholar or an intellectual should do is to read those studies and stop spreading such venomous and virulent lies, which are in fact reminiscent of 1920 and '30s Nazi campaigns against Jews. Or what we Africans get from anti-alien, racist groups and parties in Europe presently. But that is not the way of George. His is abstract empiricism! Just repeat the nonsense ad nauseam without bothering to cross-check!
Anyway, I can recollect that when he posted the same offending post to the Village, he had amended the offending portion about one ethnic group in Ghana dominating to a multiplicity of ethnic groups, thanks to my biting criticism of him (on Okyeame). He left intact that simplistic level of analysis for Nigeria and Kenya, which I also objected to too. Some of you may recollect that post.
What actually is the problem? Is that "perception," (actually it's nothing more than sheer, deep-seated expression of "native prejudice" - my coinage - against Ewes, which stock I belong to), of what they have now dubbed "Ewenisation" a new thing, arising after Rawlings became head of the PNDC? Which PNDC and later NDC Party comprise a cross-section of Ghanaians? Far from it! Indeed, all the political parties in Ghana were represented in the PNDC in its early years, so nobody was excluded. (Interestingly, Kufour, presidential candidate of the NPP, was the rep. for the PFP in the PNDC).
Villagers, it is the confrontation of the source of that native prejudice that recently spilt over into the Village under the title of “Yaa Asantewaa....” We aren't finished yet! So let me take you back just to the late 1960s, not 1900.:-)
From Denis Austin's book, Ghana Observed (1976: 125), Manchester University Press and Africana Publishing Company, we read about the anti-Ewe hysteria prior to the election that brought Dr K.A. Busia's Progress Party to power in 1969. Please bear with my long quote.

"A surprising and disagreeable novelty of the election was the extraordinary anti-Ewe sentiment that was expressed in conversation with many of those who were against Gbedemah and his party. One can explain this very strong animus not simply by a dislike of Gbedema's reappearance in political life but in relation to events after 1966 coup. Suddenly there were the soldiers and the police, and everyone bust out singing, but when the music died away it was noticed that the NLC was commanded (it seemed) by minorities: Ewe and Ga. When Ankra (a Ga) was moved out, and charges were brought over-hastily by Harlley against the Chief of the Defence Staff, Michael Otu, the evidence to many was overwhelming. It was all an Ewe plot. Soon Ghana would be run for the benefit of an energetic minority, operating first within the armed forces, and now behind Gbedemah. "Appoint an Ewe to a public corporation or to a government department and within a year the entire hierarchy down to the messenger will be Ewe.” So the argument ran.
[MY COMMENTS: As it is still running today, as shown by a piece on the web site of the Ghanaian Chronicle I have posted below - one reason for the ongoing Yaa Asantewaa fracas.].
"And there was always some evidence for it, since the Ewe, deprived of any natural wealth in their barren region, have for many years been energetic in seizing the opportunities of public employment, including positions in the army and police, which wealthier communities (like the Akan) did not wish to occupy. In practice, looking through the list of senior officers in government departments and the public corporations, the evidence is certainly not clear of any Ewe domination: it could hardly be so in view of their number. (MY COMMENT: JUST OVER 13 % OF GHANA'S POP.). But a belief does not, of course have to be true for people to hold it fervently.
Now there is an Akan-dominated government of an Akan-dominated society. Were I to become, by some improbable change of fate, leader of the governing party I would be much less apprehensive of my Ewe opponents in front than of the large and expectant following behind. I would be fearful too of the ambitions of those now excluded from power, remembering the Songs of Innocence that:
The strongest poison ever known
Came from Caesar's laurel crown".

Wise words indeed! But were the reactionary PP members told then, they would not have paid any heed. After assuming power, after a coup in which some Ewe officers played dominant roles, they set out to dismiss mostly Ewes, some few Gas and others known to be sympathetic to the banned CPP from their posts. They achieved this through the insertion of the first infamous Transitional Provisions in a Constitution of Ghana, attempts to deprive Ewes of their jobs having failed during the latter years of the NLC. This is the backdrop to the struggle Awoonor briefly mentioned in his ‘famous’ book, and for that, he has become an object of insult to all kinds of puny Akan boys and girls with some modicum of literacy. They (PP) did not last even 2 years in office! I can comment deeper on the above quote, since my own father was one key person who gave evidence, and was before then discriminated against after the coup. And there was plenty to tell, since the charges were true. Hope the official, classified documents of the hearing in camera should now be declassified to stop future speculation. I was big enough to know what was happening then, right from the 1966 coup.
My own father, being the most qualified around, was persuaded to forego confirmation for a post he had been acting in for years under the CPP regime (the CPP big-wigs thought only whites could hold the post!), just to allow a Ga to assume it, as Ewes were supposed to be already too many in similar posts! It was indeed a case of jobs for the boys all over again! So there was some sort of Affirmative Action going on to allow newly qualified Akans and others to also assume posts they did not formerly want. I suffered same fate with another Ewe friend too before, in our seeking a simple vacation job in 1976! And to think an Ewe, a father to a dormitory mate in school was in charge of the recruitment! But he explained, and we accepted, that even though far better qualified, they must take some others too, or they'd be hearing complaints again! So they took on 2 Twi-speaking secondary F4 girls while I, a Sixth Former armed with superlative ‘O’ L results and 3 RSA Stage 2 in English, Accounting and Commerce, was turned down! My friend was also an ‘O’L graduate with good grades and teaching part-time in a preparatory school while pursuing the CA then.
Unfortunately, they (PP, now NPP cohorts) have not learned anything from their past folly and are condemned to the political wilderness, raining insults on all and sundry. Most Ghanaians don't trust them any longer.
Anyway, some of us said enough is enough with this ethnic demonisation, while we are not even enjoying the fruits of office. Our region ranks among the lowest on the development ladder, a permanent position of "Number 9" among 10!:-) We gonna respond and do you in proper, exposing you down to your fathers and mentally warped ancestors who passed on to you those kinds of native prejudice; not better than those held by white supremacists we have come to know in our sojourn among white people.
After all, some of us know that white supremacist ideas had origins from ideas held by the incestuous ancient Egyptians about other peoples! They used to call the Greeks barbarians and no Egyptian girl would kiss a Greek ‘cos Greeks eat pork and meat, taboos to Egyptians. The demon in our midst is our own creation! Let us deal with it right from our homes! To UNIFY any people in a meaningful way, some would have to be made to drop their feelings of superiority and prejudices they hold about others within the same group. Period!
I think Rawlings has done enough to remove that image from the eyes of the mass of Ghanaians. In 1966, Kotoka would have been quite unacceptable to most non-Ewe Ghanaians as Head of State. That's why Ankrah was brought out of retirement to be head of the NLC. After all, by 1966, Ewes were just "Ayigbe dzorlor," i.e., "Ayigbe thieves," the pejorative term you Gas had coined for us Ewes, George. Africa, attacking the PNDC, in which he delineated the various Ewe groups and pointed out the Anlos as the Ewes who must be killed by the Akans then plotting to kill Ewes? That's in the early 90s!
I've on my table some vituperations of a London-based northern Ewe group too, which I haven't as yet dealt with. Kind of letting lying dogs lie attitude. If northern Ewes attack Akans, especially Asantes, I won't dare upbraid them! As an Asante, you should know why, being partners in the crimes against humanity committed against their forefathers I shall be revisiting soon in order to put to rest their angst against Anlos too.

I have my own experiences from Mawuli School, when a Ga who came to 6th Form, was shocked to learn that cocoa is produced in the VR too, to support that! He attended Wesley Grammar. According to him, anytime the CMB scholarships were awarded to students in the school, the Akan students would start mourning that even "Ayigbe" students got and they didn't! I bet those Ewe students, no doubt, wards of the Ewe elite in Accra, didn't even know themselves that cocoa is produced in the VR, unless they came from northern VR.
In the early days of Ghanaweb, we had argument with Dr Kofi Ellison when he made that ignorant statement too. This, despite Frimpong Ansah's book, The Vampire State.... which detailed the contribution of various regions to cocoa output from the very first export of a few pounds of cocoa in the C19th.
BTW, Tetteh Quashie wasn't the first to have brought cocoa cultivation
to the Gold Coast.

I think we should praise and encourage people like Mensah Abrampa for being bold enough to call a spade a spade. Even though the current generation might still be steeped in ethnocentrism, people like Abrampa are telling the younger generation to take a different -- and more positive -- route, which eventually would lead to success, unity, and advancement.
I understand the source of your cynicism, ANDY-K, but let's give the younger generation a chance to chart their own course, far different from the hate, suspicion, and mistrust that they have observed in our contemporary culture.

Kola should not be saying things about Asantes as a whole, and I have appealed to him on a number of occasions to stop. The same way, I am hoping that those who attack other ethnic groups other than own are not helping matters. Ewes have also suffered at the hands of certain people on this site, and this behavior must be condemned.
While I am willing to turn the other cheek when attacked, I cannot say everyone else should do the same. What we should all not be doing, however, is blame an entire group for one person's comments, and herein lies the continued acrimony between Asantes and Ewes.
Sarps, you're well respected on this site, so let's try to appeal to our different groups to stop attacking tribes instead of individuals, if they choose to not turn the other cheek.

Yes, Federal and State courts would decide punishment phase of jurisprudence without inviting any witnesses when the trial phase has already been decided like in this Mabey and Johnson court case in LONDON.
CORNEY, there was no trila proceedings in the Mabey and Johson case because MABEY and JOHNSON has already pleaded guilty and cut a deal so there was no reason to call witnesses.
You have to bear in mind that, those NDC officials named by the court were not on trial and neither were they convicted of any crime. They were just named as some of the People who received bribes.
If they think they have been unjustifiably accused and their names smeared by the Court or Mabey and Johnson, they can go to court in England which has jurisdition over that case and sue Mabey and Johnson as Sika YANKEY has implied to do.

My response to you is whatever you stated in your article does not make Ashantis or Akan anymore superior to any other Ghanaian and it is about time you got used to that idea. What we need now are Ghanaians regardless of tribal affiliation, ready to unravel the numerous problems facing the country and finding lasting solutions to these problems and thereby raising the image of Ghana. So far the Ashantis have failed to do that and so do most Ghanaians. However, I don't see how in this article he is asking any tribe to kowtow to his tribe.

There are more important things in the article worth repudiating, e.g., the issues of cocoa scholarships and other groups ganging up to subjugate the Akans, so, The Truth, I would have argued differently.
The article has been roundly condemned, which shows our collective rejection of such dangerous ideology. None of us is perfect, and we learn from our mistakes. Hopefully, Adofo would see this piece as a wake-up call to change his ways. We are all brothers and sisters in Ghana, and what unites us should be far more prominent in our minds and lives than our cultural differences.
If I run into Adofo tomorrow, we'd share a meal together, which is how we ought to approach one another, whether or not we belong to different political persuasions.

If Ghana is for them as they have claimed all along and with their wisdom and intelligence, what is driving them to a country with a very weak IQ and which they considered to be inferior to theirs. It is only an inferior person who would make such statement. No normal human being would. The fact is that, no tribe is supurior to any other tribe in this country. The Asantes/Akyems are not superior to any tribe in this country and will not. They can continue to deceive themselves, for it is their right but we the good people of this country will not allow them to go away with it. Only primitive and low IQ animal species would make such statements, and that is exactly what they are making. Perhaps, this insane guy is only reminding the SC judges hearing the petition at the court that they shouldn´t forget, the wisdom and intelligence of his Akufo Addo, and do the right thing to make him the president. They all hated Ashantis (though Rawlings claims he'd married a half-Ashanti half-northerner) Their jealousy led them to select Ashantis to be annihilated to the extent that no Ashanti was even given scholarship from the '70's because the secretariat was manned by Ewes.
Mahama also came with his northern agenda to have the temerity to cancel all Akan names from the selected candidates to Cuba. Akans should not forget this. On free SSS, I support it whole heartedly but I am not sure if my views coincide precisely with that of Nana, since I really didn't follow the debate. If that includes free lodging, food and school uniforms, then I disagree with that aspect, as that must be means based. In fact, I see the present free education policy in northern Ghana as patently flawed, needing urgent review, so that the rich people pay for their wards.

I used to think all Chinese were good at Mathematics until I sat in undergraduate classes with some of them for Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Thermo-dynamics. No matter how basic I tried to clarify things to them, these guys just couldn't get it. Did that mean being a Ghanaian or black made me more intelligent than the Chinese? Hell No!! What does that make of my youthful belief that all Chinese are good in Math? Gabbage. My friend Rockson, stop thinking in terms of RACIAL or TRIBAL skewness; always think in STRAIGHT, GENERAL, UNIVERSAL terms. All humans are equal - just read the United States Constitution. All humans can be intelligen if they are in the right socio-economic environment that adequately promotes and supports intellectual development. The 1960s research in the U.S. has shown that, black students were performing very, very, badly compared to white students in New York City. Why? The black kids were growing up in projects, and the white kids were growing up in lavish middle-class or upper class neighborhoods and in most cases their parents were all university graduates. So the researchers moved some of the same black kids from the projects of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Harlem and placed them with affluent, well-educated, good income black couples in upscale neighborhoods in upstate New York. Those same kids performed magna-cum-lada after 2 years. So Rockson, it's not TRIBE or RACE, it is rather SOCIO-ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE or LEVERAGE. Every article I have read authored by you always carried heavy tribal tones, and I don't like that. My mother is an Ewe and my father is an Asante - my father abandoned my mom in the 1970s because of beliefs like yours; so I hope you can now see and understand what my mom taught me.
