Go to any secondary school in the north and you will realize that 95% of the students are in the General Arts class. If you ask the students why it is so they will simply tell you 'that is the easiest way to go to the university'. I always say northerners have enough time and space to develop but university education has made their leaders useless. Can you imagine all the juiciest contracts are executed by southern technicians, foremen, operators, etc, yet these people will turn around and tell you they are poor.90% of all those who go to Mecca every year are from the north. Every Hajj participant pays $3500 plus additional pocket money to spend. This shows that northern poverty is a myth. This is how far our useless university education has brought us.

The gab between the first education of the south and the north is 300 years. In fact the Northerners hav done well. They are very hard working people and wouldn't mind doing the hardest work to survive. Ghana can ever pay the north back with even 300 years of free education. The south has government schools, hospitals, airport, transportations build with northern labor for freeeeeee. northerner mmo you have come a long way. Professor Amin's comments are excellent, but as a great man Marx once stated the point is how to change the situation. SADA must be people oriented in thought and action and by action, I mean run professionally and transparent. SADA must learn from Burkina Faso where food production is up and as reported in the Business section of this site Ghana is importing food from a country with poorer soils. SADA needs to support the widespread introduction of vocational or technical education. Good luck to SADA!

God has given us the hands, legs and brains to conquer our circumstances. Why can't we use them to improve our living conditions. Or we're still suffering from this culture of entitlement where we look up to the 'government' to provide everything for us?
Elsewhere there are blind and deaf people who have worked so hard to become certified accountants and lawyers, and we're here in Ghana crying of poverty. Let's renew our mind, let's free our mind.

That assertion that northerners aren't poor bcoz of laziness is just BS pure and simple. The excuse of historical and geographic circumstance won't fly bcoz poverty or lack therof is 1st and foremost a cultural conditioning and can be learnt or unlearnt. How do you explain the presence of highly paid educated Ghanaians reckless with money who are outdone by illeducated Ghanaians who have business acumen? How do you explain the prsence of poor blacks who live in the same country as richer whites? How do you explain the presence of rich Lebanese who are all over West Africa trading in the same environment as Ghanaians who can't cut it in business? Its all about how you approach life and northerners are not different from anybody else. All they have to do is change their thinking and they'll have as good as anybody else.Changing one's thinking has no geographical or historical baggage except that which the northerners choose to impose on themselves. No one will ever do their thinking for them.

Northerners are Poor because they have loved HANDOUTS and free, free stuff over the years instead of work, work stuff.
Over the years maybe even before Nkrumah, Northerners have been cuddled, and caressed with all manner of free things. Free education, free food for pupils in schools, NGO here and everywhere...and they have gladly extended the hand and grabbed it and then gone to sleep.
It is NEVER geographical as many Northern authors claim..because Burkina Faso, Niger and the others are closer to the desert. But now Ghana imports onions, among other produce from our neighbors upstairs.
Because the Northerner is after free things from the national pie, look at the number of northerners in politics compared to the say the Kwahu.
Then there is the failure or absence of northern leadership. Almost all the northern "role-models" are ensconced in Accra. They go north to enjoy the free things (like our prez) and gallop down to Accra after their enjoyment. The money sent upstairs ends up educating the northern elite, who then builds palatial mansions in Accra.
SADA is the latest but at the end of the day..."the akonfem's will fly away, a FEW northerners will have their pockets full, and the plight of our weak cousins will get WEAKER.
Thats the way its been, and will continue to be UNTIL we stop giving our cousins FREE HAND OUTS AND HAND ME DOWNS.

Northerners would not be poor if they were to plan well and know what to do. The man who brought cocoa to Ghana was not an Asante man, he was an Akuapem man, but today Asantes dominate in the cocoa industry. They have traveled to all areas in Ghana where they can grow cocoa - the spirit of hard work.
Every region in Ghana is blessed with one natural resource or the other, depending on the geographical nature of the region. The three northern regions can boast of the savannah climate that is so conducive to the rearing of cattle, sheep, goats, and chicken. Animal husbandry could therefore make northerners very rich if they can plan well. Again they have shea trees from which they produce shea butter that has many industrial uses. All these resource could fetch them good incomes if they would exploit them well. But like you said, they like free things and quick money. Educated and rich people from the north would rather enjoy the cozy lives they can find in the south instead of developing their area.

Conduct a workshop to discuss issues to help them, and they ask for allowances and transportation. The begging syndrome is just too much, and until they rise out of their slumber to work with their heads and hands, we will continue to have the SADAs and several other initiatives - and the results will be the same. Hotel accomodation is exorbitant in Tamale and food is way expensive too - why? because there are all these NGOs and donor (development?) partners there working. Northerners, please sit up and take the bull by the horn. Your destiny is in your own hands and not in SADA or the south, for that matter.
