The title of this confused article is misleading. I was led to read it because I thought the author was going to argue that the law cannot stop homosexuality in Africa because NOTHING CAN STOP IT.
Instead, the author argues, very poorly, that something else other than the law can stop it. He is very wrong there. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can stop homosexuality in Africa or elsewhere. If something can stop it, it would have done so in some societies. But homosexuality has existed in all societies at all times. What we see today is just the successful questioning of the basis on which the practice is suppressed.
Today, it is becoming more and more difficult to find any moral basis to condemn the act. It is also impossible today to prove that there's something inherently criminal in the act itself as long as it is indulged in by consenting adults. You cannot quote the Bible or Quran to condemn it because what is right and wrong is increasingly no longer being determined by those two holy books.
That is why the authour's prescriptions are all bound to fail. The law, the church and the family will NEVER succeed in rooting out homosexual tendencies in human beings because these drives are embedded in our very human natures. If these institutions cannot stop human beings from stealing and other patently negative acts, how can they stop homosexuality which cannot be proven to be a negative act?
The African countries passing laws against homosexuality will never succeed with what they think they are after. No law can ban sex, whether homosexual or straight.
The author also discusses certain points that are really no longer subjects of dispute. That peer pressure argument is weak and hardly merits discussion. Will you say people engage in straight sex because of peer pressure?
And, Richard, the term is carnal (as related to the body) knowledge not canal. Canal is a water passage or tube and has nothing to do with sex. It seems also you're not sure whether to use "gay" as an adjective or noun.
