The issue of this GMO foods and whatnots and it's adoption based on improved yields, more nutritious, drought resistant, less use of fertilizer etc, etc as a necessary prerequisite to food security especially in underdeveloped countries such as those in Africa and Asia, based on projected population explosion and therefore a projected food insecurity situation again in the less developed countries is so myopic and lacks any cogent scientific positives/factors to support it's use.
The notion that is has been engineered again to meet the supposed nutritional requirements by the proponents and advocates of the GMO foods is again without merit.
The adoption of GMO foods from a scientific basis alone in terms of it's health implications has not been established effectively to be safe as a result of lack of detailed research over a long period of time to conclusively support same, and on this score, it needs to be rejected.
Again, with respect to the sovereignty of the nation and the protection of our seed culture and bank, and not resort to foreign interests and corps, effectively, mortgaging our very existence to these interests to determine via genetic engineering what we consume is to sell our very lives to these interests and again on this score, this GMO foods thing needs to be rejected.
Indeed, the issues that affects the lack of food is not solved by the adoption of GMO foods. The answer is infrastructural, economic and environmental in nature.
One, we need well laid out access roads to the food basket regions of the country. These access roads are described as feeder roads. Gov't would need to prioritize and construct asphalt roads to these roads, since rainfall patterns are such that, these roads, get eroded every rainy season. As to how priority investment has not been directed at fixing these perennial problems beats ones imagination.
Second, there should be inter-linkages to promote and increase the relative speed which food produce gets to the centers. Storage facilities need to be looked at. Ready market for food produce should be available to spur more production. Value addition to these foods would have to be looked at as well, to get money into the pockets of the farmers to produce more to feed the fresh produce market and also feed industry. Farming practices which are basically subsistence in nature would have to be completely looked at again and a shift made towards mechanized large scale agriculture and in this regard, our land tenure systems would have to be looked at, with policies and programs formulated to engender private sector investment in large scale mechanized farming with a ready market for food produce. The land degradation which is environmental in nature as a result of illegal mining activities which most often are as a result of farmers not making any money from their farming activities and therefore lease their lands or completely give them out for illegal mining activities would have to be addressed, since they feed on each other.
The things that would need to ensure food security does not need GMO foods to solve by any stretch and this is the time for gov't to show leadership and address the identified issues which are affecting the agricultural sector and spare Ghanaians this Trojan horse of GMO foods, which is really a health hazard and an existential conundrum which Ghana cannot afford to saddle itself with, when the very bearers of this GMO foods proposition have been rejected completely without any reservation in their own backyard.

You want to grow GMO foods and you think the Europeans or the Asians will continue buying your exports? Why can't leaders in this country think far. They're so myopic, you wonder.
