Darko, is the university an independent entity, drawing on its own financial resources to run its day to day affairs? This is the pertinent question you should ask and not blindly endorse a decision that flies in the face of reasoning and logic...what exactly does the university seek to accomplish with this decision? To refurbish its roads? The government takes care of that, the university is a public institution financed by the tax payer of Ghana, foisting tolls on whoever uses the roads on the campus is devious and pure greedy......universities around the world don't do such things, even private universities funded largely by private donations from mostly alumni, wont think of such an outrageous measure.....

There are lots of people in Ghana who have not travelled beyond their birth areas. Should those people pay for the roads in Accra? By your logic, Otchere Darko should we not defer to regional-based tax system to build and construct roads in each region or district? Legon is attempting to usurp unto itself the powers to impose taxes. They should either wait till Legon becomes a private institution or all roads in and around Legon are privatized. While at it they should pay for the wages, salaries and benefit packages of all its employees while they pay taxes to the national government. The universities in Ghana are failing to raise revenues either through operations and or through its alums because they are becoming factories for selfish and unenlightened professors who acquired their advanced degrees and have not contributed to meaningful human development in Ghana. Stagnant education will not cut it anymore and it is about time entrenched attitudes gave way to new dynamism at Ghana's post secondary institutions. Universities are not factories for testing stupidity but for meaningful lessons of the applicable kind.

That is not fully true. They have a system in place to handle that. If you are a student who owns a car you pay a fee for parking per semester added to your tuition at registration. Not applicable if you do not own a car. These monies collected goes to maintaining the parking lot and school roods.
Tolls are either public or private. I leave that to the supreme court to decide if UG streets are public or private. To me if the school is paying to maintain it then it is private and they deserve to implement a method recoup their expenses.
Thanks to President George Bush for pushing to get funding for the President George Bush Highway. Now Ghanaians are happy paying tolls and driving on it daily. The tolls collected goes to maintain it.
In order for Ghana to advance, some roads maintenance will have to come from the private sector. We all know the cedi is falling. It is critical for the Government to cut down on expenditure by involving the private sector. The government cannot continue to foot everything for us. All being said, as long as the roads are maintain, car owners will be the winners: less car repairs- driving on good roads. One of the reasons cars break down in Ghana is due to bad roads...pot holes everywhere..cars are mechanical devices put together. The more they vibrate on roads, the more the break down.
