Whiles coming to work today and listening to the B.B.C. I heard that in a particular part of Kenya women had sex for fish which they later sell in the market. I am not sure if those of the B.B.C. ask themselves if Kenyan who come to London everyday to buy various things have the things exchange with sex.
My mother was one of those who started selling fresh river fish in the middle 60s. The fishermen were mostly people from the Anlo area of the Volta Region, meaning that some of them are even close relatives of my mother and her colleague fish sellers. If my mother and others are to exchange sex for fish it would have been a big story in her father's palace and its villages.
My own uncles both from my father's and mother's side left the village in 1965 when the Volta Lake started producing fish of various kinds in large quantities. Imagine also is my uncles were to have changed his fish or sex the number of children the women fish sellers who are mostly from the Anlo District of the Volta Region should have brought to our village.
It happened that the inhabitants of a town in the Krobo area who are not fishermen use to call my mother and others women who have sex in exchange of fish. Atta Ayi from La was the driver of my mother and others and the driver would have been the man in position to change transport for sex. But Mr. Ayi does not change transport for sex. So one afternoon when he got to the town with truck the young men in the town gathered around it and begun to shout "asorkpe". Mr. Ayi told the men I want us to put an end to this asorkpe once and for all today. The young men ask why if it is sex for fish, then body and body are against each other. Thus I want the strongest among you to come forward to challenge me in a boxing contest. If he wins you are at liberty to continue with the asorkpe until I bring a person who would stop this nonsense. But if I win it means that you have said your last asorkpe in your whole life.
The first blow from Mr. Ayi sent the young man to the flaw. That was the end of asorkpe.
Back to the Kenyan woman who said that she sold her body for sex. But the question which the mischievious B.B.C. did not ask is does she have sex with does she gave the fish to in the market?
That also send us back to the issue of a Nfanti woman who a U.S. court protected from being deported because she would have her genital mutilated if she returns to Ghana.
It also brought about the case of an Iranian woman whose picture appeared in the west supposed to have been killed by Iranian soldiers. It latter turned up that a journalist from BBC took the woman's picture and doctored it created a fiction with her picture and sold it to gullible British citizens as well as their like minded types around the world.
We saw the Hugo Chavez videos in 2002 a creation of western intelligence agencies which lead to temporally removal of him from power for some time.
We also witness how a Syrian woman was alleged to have been rapped by scores of Syrian soldiers. The woman whose picture was published by the CNN later come out to say that the story was false.
We are not told today that a UN investigation revealed that woman in North Korean prisons were forced to murder their babies. That alleged crime by supposed defectors from North Korea was to put the whole country before the International Criminal Court, and not individuals who are supposed to have committed such crime. It is on record that the majority of news which are manufactured to put countries which are not attached to the doll master's string of the west is mainly by women against their fellow women.
I am of the view that the case of women in the fish trading industry having sex with fishermen is not for exchange of fish. The issue is that I watched my own mother coming from the market tied and after counting her money from the days sales goes into a deep sleep. You have to wait for an hour or to to wake her up to take her supper, which is at times around 9:00 p.m. or later than that. Also the majority of women in the fresh fish selling trade or single women who can spare time for sex only during the day because of the nature of their trade.
Most of the times stories put forward by the BBC and other western news agencies is so absurd. There are thousands of women who sell fresh river fish in Ghana and bought their fish from various sources. Do they exchange fish with sex? My mother never did that and thus I can not accuse any woman fish seller or fisherman of the hunter stories that BBC is putting up.

There surely is a lot to say about this adventure but fact is that this relationship benefits both continents and will do so for many years to come. As Africans we must remember to learn from past mistakes and previous negatives to ensure our growth and development within this relationship is positive and enhance the continent on all socio-economic and environmental levels. The writer said it well when stressing that economic and non-interference takes precedence over selfish political ideals. Africa should now remember its value within this relationship and go forward in wisdom. We need to embrace every effort to build and enhance this relationship at all levels.
