Every hospital has strict procedures to guard against such things. Other mistakes can occur too especially exchanging babies at birth and giving the wrong ones to the the wrong mothers. These procedures have operated for decades in Ghana. Why should they break down now? Because of greed? Too bad.
Do they allow fathers in Ghanaian hospitals to be witness to births of their children and see the entire process? There are still taboos that a man should not witness births. He can screw the woman well well but not witness the outcome. Some Africans say their juju will disappear when they witness births. Haba!
Such things don't happen with traditional births in the home in the villages. But these can also be dangerous when complications come in that the traditional midwife cannot cope with.
I think the problem is worse in the big towns - Kumasi and Accra so that is where more vigilance should be observed.

Stephen Atta, since you are an author, why not write a novel based on this? It will make very interesting reading if you handle the plot well. The twin story is great and remember Selasie's novel Ghana Must Go has a twins element in it. Go, Stephen, Go. Another novel is waiting to be written by the author of Dark Faces at Crossroads

I agree to you 1000 percent. In Europe and most advanced countries fathers or a birth partner (can be a relative or friend of the woman) must be present in the delivery room or even theater. Ghana must introduced such a law.

In our world today, we have everything to prevent such things from happening. In most parts of the world today, the husband or sister etc is allowed to witness the delivery live, in addition to this in some hospitals the whole thing is video recorded. But most of all we have DNA test which can reliably tell whether a baby even if born still, is truly from that woman or not.

When people plan to steal a baby, they will take the baby away long before there's need for DNA to decide anything. The thing is to make it impossible for them to take away the baby in the first place.

In the case of Ghana, it can not be said to be stealing, for the fact that, the nurses and doctors are in league with this abominable crime. That is not to say that, it is happening only in Ghana. A few week ago, the samething happened in one of the Spanish cities, and the couple involved are well to do people. As usual, the nurses were behind this.It is fast becoming a lucrutive business for health workers.Just recently in China, a doctor was jailed for same offence. I think they should be a strict regulations regarding women who go to give birth, vis a vis family members being presence before the pregnant woman gives birth.

This is a very thoughtful and deep insight
revelation. It would be nice if you move one step further,
by researching deep into this issue and write
a proper novel or book on the issue.

The world indeed is a small place , Atta Krufi is now a happy man . Our hospitals must be governed with strict laws with sanctions.
Ghana today is a lawless state and all we know is talking without action.

I am sure most people will agree with you but Ghana has no GHS100 yet. Thank you for those information.

I have a personal experience of baby stealing attempt on my own first born baby girl in 1968. If my wife who was then my girl friend, had not been vigilant and courageous to reject a different baby they tried to persuade her to accept,we would have lost our own biological daughter for good.
I will call to give you the full details later.
Meanwhile, thank you very much for this your unique article.
