Well, we also know about the incumbency advantage and what it entails, whether fair or foul means.
The real question is, can Nana debate the President and be quick on his feet, without going heavy, where by he 'll give the IEA audience bumper stickers, or populism arguments to win over floating voters?
For starters, if Nana has nothing at all to say, he can reiterate you know whose talking points, i.e. he's going to double the country's energy capacity to five gigawatts, or 5,000 megawatts by 2016.
He can also say that now that things are faltering economically because of their prowess in management, he's going to replace Seth Terkper with their real economist, ace in the hole, Fiifi Fiafi Kwetey because he's the one advising the President and disputing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's diagnosis and prognosis.
Nana can talk about how these NDCeivers promised to build 200 senior high schools by 2016, in addition to making education truly free but compulsory....although the meat is down to the bones.
On the flipside, there are a lot that Nana can talk about on his own, including industrializing the economy...
Banning cutlass and manual farming, and supplanting them with mechanized farming and its supply chain. Ayariga tractor and farming inputs; does it ring a bell?
Nana can talk about expansion in water, energy, as well as engendering a conducive environment for businesses to flourish via building a dual-carriage rail network from the South to the North, in order to open up the country for a real development, anaa?
Their playbook entails hoarding resources till election time, and then splurging in order to buy the polls. After all, he said Ghanians have a short memory, remember?

There are capable people in the NPP who may even be more acceptable to the Ghanaian electorate than Nana Addo but the Akyem/Ashanti fraternities in the party are the stumbling blocks preventing them from making a wise decision.
Because Kuffuor who last ruled is an Ashanti, the Akyems think this is their turn. Even though they know their Kapwepwe will never deliver the presidency to them, any attempt to replace him with, lest say, Alan Kyeremanteng, hell will break loose. A similar situation in the past led to Mr. William Ofori-Atta (Paa Willie) breaking away and forming another party.
Another thing too is that, Nana Addo knows how to play the political card in his favor(except for winning elections). His SC challenge, absence from the country soon after losing the challenge and subsequent declaration of interest in vying again for the flagbearer of the NPP, are all calculated plans for another opportunity to lead the party and if possible, unopposed. Despite his health and age, the man still does not want to pass the flag on to somebody else to try. In fact, he cares less about how long his selfish interests keeps the NPP in opposition.
How can someone who struggles to win leadership primaries in his own party expect to win on the national stage?
In the last 45 years, the NPP only had the opportunity to rule Ghana for 8 years.

But then the party should also make Ghanaians see that there's really no Akyem/Ashanti rotation because that is clearly undemocratic.
I remember well Paa Willie (Osu Cemetary...) breakaway UNC. He succeeded in having a good chunk of Ewes led by Okudzeto with him and they won two Ewe seats. Paa Willie was old then too but he was a far more likeable person than Nana Addo is in today's tribalistic politics. Akufo-Addo will find it difficult to get the votes of those who didn't vote for him the last time around.
What worries me is this "kyinkyiniaaa, I will be president" attitude. There's something cynical in it. If you fail once, try again. After a second failure, you should say it's enough because this is not a personal thing and there are many people in the party(?) who also want to try the same thing. They're not getting the chance because of A-A.
The only thing we can hope for now is for the party to encourage and support other capable persons to give Nana a good challenge at the primaries and probably beat him there. There should be no back room deals that favour him. If three or four equally good candidates stand and Akufo loses, then the party should rally around the winner to get him to the "White House".
The only way Akufo will realize that enough is enough is for him to lose the primaries in a fair contest. Else he risks becoming a problem on the party - people don't want to come forward because of him!!!

Well, well, well. This is another timely advise from a reasonable writer. As to whether they will take it or not, is another issues all together. I think that, the mistake has already been made by this man declaring to stand again. If anything at all, this is the most damaging to the party. The very few rallying around this single man, just for their stomach seem to have the louder voices and are prepared to cow anyone who wants to bring sanity into the party. As an NDC man, happy though I may be for these developments, I can not lose sight of the fact that, it is not good for our fledling democracy. We need a very strong opposition who can take on the ruling government and eventually takeover power from them. Sadly, this is gradually eluding Ghanaians. If Nana Addo stands for elections for a hundred times, he will lose and lose misirable. It is already written clear on the walls. As a matter of fact, he has completely damaged the chances of any other candidate as well.
Listening to people around him speak, make Ghanaians sick. They have over the time demonstrated what they wil take this country through, if they have the mandate to rule. Ghanaians are not ready for such arrogance and authoritarian types of behaviour full of self importance, coupled with tribalism. Nana Addo is a failure for good. He should just do the right thing to go back to his village and relax.
