The title was compelling enough to attract my attention. I read the entire piece and must admit I'm very impressed with this student writer's paper. Efficient use of energy will not only translate into conservation but more importantly the effort will leave extra money in the pocket of consumers. One reason why the rich get richer is because they're not as careless in their spending habits as the teeming poor. I learned a useful lesson on arrival to the US. Unplugging my cell phone charger as soon as charging was complete proved to be very helpful .
Many rich nations practise various energy conservation methods so why won't a poor nation like Ghana whose economy is on life support from donor nations. In the US, the government's plan to encourage consumers to replace existing high energy consuming light bulbs with more energy efficient bulbs was met with fierce consumer resistance but if this gesture isn't indicative of their commitment to reduce its energy consumption then what is it ?
Whilst conceding that Ahmed Salim Nuhu's comments are refreshing I was expecting this to come from the Energy sectot minister himself. We have on our hands a bunch of lazy ministers of state who're feeding fat on our scarce resources yet all they are good at is doing the administration's propaganda work.
Energy saving programs help no matter how modest. They are also not new to Ghana and I keep wondering where the energy minister has been all this time.

Abrampa, unfortunately, there's electricity waste all over the country. Go to ECG, GRIDCO, VRA, NEDCO and EC offices and you'll find lots of energy waste. Also, these agencies together with our airports and other government offices contribute to the high level of waste. All of these offices have air conditioners on with doors and windows left opened. Electricity waste in the year 2012 per available data ranged between 27 - 37%. My research studies confirms that Ghanaians are unaware of these gaps and will require the energy experts at ECG, NEDCO and EC to role out an educational program to raise awareness. This initiative will not only reduce energy demand but will also save on consumer energy cost as well as increase availability for industrial use.

I find this article a bit ill informing on the real causes of power consumption. I beg to differ that a phone charger which is plugged in without the load(a phone) being connected to charge will not necessarily consume power. Even for some fons the moment the fon is fully charged a built in device automatically cuts off current until a certain threshold to begin charging.A particular case of some chargers with an indicator red diode lights signals will consume very minute current at the source. So i shudder to say that mobile fon chargers inadvetently plugged in plays a non concomitant role in power consumption in as much as it is infinitesmally small more especially as any other single home appliance plugged in to operate for even one minute will out do a one week fon charger with a fitted diode light indicator. I think the writer who is a student of electronics has to learn that electrical loads come in different ratings and affect cuurent consumption accordingly. Fon chargers which are pluggged in without the load is vestigial and plays no active role in the circuitory. Thanks

Prof. and all,
Energy conservation differs from energy efficiency. Energy efficiency aims at reducing energy consumption through technological and behavioral changes whereas energy conservation aims at a complete avoidance of energy sources when not in need due to higher prices. A typical household with electrical appliances may incur an average standby cost of GHC26.98 on a monthly basis just to have these appliances plugged into an electrical system. To conserve energy and save on electricity cost, appliances must be completely unplugged from the power outlet to reduce cost. Additionally taking measures to retain cooling in a given space coupled with the use of daylight may reduce the overall energy cost and minimize waste.
Furthermore, any electrical device plugged into an electrical outlet do consume some power often referred to as standby or running cost. This can be avoided when these devices are completely unplugged when not in use.

Well done Mr. Nuhu.
Your article came at the correct time to create awareness, at a time when our country needs to do everything possible to shape her energy future.
Does plugging things that use electricity really have effect on our energy consumption?
I will categorically say yes!
Please everybody go around your house and switch off everything that uses electricity - lights, refrigerators, computers, televisions, cell phones, and every appliance that uses power, and just watch what happens to the electric meter - the spinning meter will slow down. Leaving your cell phone unplug does waste the use of electricity, ladies and gentleman.
We can play a significant role in controlling load shedding, and make an impact on the 'dumsor dumsor' if we pay attention to how we use electricity in our homes, place of work , churches, schools, hospitals, factories, mines, etc. We should be mindful of how we use electricity.
