We sowed a centralized system of government in tears and decades later we're reaping in tears. Centralized power and influence in the Nkrumah era led to constitutional dictatorship. All we've done after Nkrumah's overthrow is limit the president's office tenure to a two term maximum of four years each while maintaining the centralized governing system.
We've not failed to notice the disadvantages of a centralized government but we only managed over the years to kick feebly against it as we paid a mere lip service to de-centralization.
The unfinished business of government decentralization must be concluded with the spirit of urgency to promote a more rapid transformation and development of each district. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and when more people are involved in the decision making process they become more committed to overseeing its success than when they're excluded and finally two heads are better than one.
Maybe it's time to re-open the debate on adopting the federal system of government. It works.
