Charlene,
A good one there. The prejudice of "these Akans" must be confronted, not side-stepped and condoned.
It is a pity some of your northern compatriots make common cause with NPP simply cos they come from the tradition that helped the forefathers of "these Akans" to despoil and depopulate the North during the era of the slave trade. You therefore have to look inward to find your redemption too.

Charlene brilliantly 'pours her heart out' in such a touchy issue and, here comes a fake Ewe nationalist, smelling blood and trying to pitch "these Akans" against "those northerners". Pitiful, indeed. ANDY-K, be bold and cast the first stone if your hands are really clean of the evils you are accusing "these Akans" of.
PREJUDICE ABOUNDS IN ALL ETHNICITIES, TRIBES AND GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS, ENEN IN NORTHERN GHANA.
ANDY-K, you don't speak for Anlodome, let alone Ewedome. You don't even speak for the beautiful bride you bolted away with from the 'T'-shrine[ Taflatse!!]. THANK GOD!!!
Legend has it that centuries ago, long, long, long before the founding of this once-upon-a-time beautiful nation, now an ignoble entity and the mother of all stand-up comedian lines[courtesy Kofi Dubhai], noble, peace-loving and enterprising citizens sailed off from Notsie in reverse gear to the estuary of the mighty river in gallant pursuit of hapiness and prosperity. Therefore, before even the Gold coast was, Ghana Eweland IS[ being Bibilcal here ].
ANDY-K, why don't you back-pedal your lonely ass all the way to Notsie, to face Notorious BIG Agorkoli and see how long your coconut head stays attached to your shoulders. Take your pal, Okoampa, with you. Be glad if you have even a handful of Ewes sail wit you.
ANDY-K, GO WEY YOU!!!

But beware of Minor Case and Young Pioneer whose goal is no different from Andy: they are all caught in their ethnic and partisan bigotry and look for opportunities to insinuate themselves into the genuine dirge of our Northern sibling, thereby appropriating her message for their shallow mischief.

I wrote my rejoinder just before I went to bed. Busy now but just a brief response, in order to let you guys know that I didn't run away.
First, Lexus (quite a pathetic Ewe) and SAS (well-meaning Akan who really doesn't have the grips of how to handle this issue), you can both behave like the proverbial ostriches and stick your heads in the hot desert sand and pretend that Charlene's piece is a fine embroidery of Northern Ghana's superlative qualities, rather than a satirical denunciation of the huge prejudice some members of the Akan ethnic group have been expressing against them. Of course, I have dubbed those particular Akans, mostly linked to the UP tradition, "these Akans", with a stress on "these". Yes, like saying "those boys" doesn't mean all the boys in the world.
Now, having clarified myself again, I'd be the last to deny that prejudice is mutual in Ghana. It is just a qs of how expresses it most. I've tackled that in my much talked series which has been lying fallow for years now. Yes, the day I saw that illiterate groundnut seller from the North shouting "Ayigbe, ayigbe,..." at that comely but irate Ewe lady who came to the Airport to check up her luggage which didn't arrive with her from London, for refusing to buy her peanuts and telling her to stop pushing the groundnut into her face, I knew that I one day would be taking up this issue of ethnic prejudice.
As for Minor Case, let me have your take on the slave trade. I am waiting. Are you even aware that Eweland was known as the Slave Coast?
I shall certainly be back!

Tribalism: fake, fleeting allegiances among illusional categories (tribal "groups", based on nothing of true permanence), which are speedily disintegrating, because the only glue (necessity to find protection in a larger group - rally around the flag) that hitherto barely held them together is quickly crumbling to perdition.
What all of you, whom it may concern, still seem overly identifying with is just a winking of the eye of history. Whisking away an overcome impurity hindering it's eyesight.
In one moment, one "tribe" is touting the affection of another one, the next moment all sworn vows are ruthlessly broken and forgotten, as opportunity prescribes, the next the former allies turn into ferocious enemies, the next the mighty tribe perishes or it's faiths and "cultural heritage" - once defended with bloody fervour - simply forgotten and abandoned.
What stays is only our unity as children of creation, our shared potential for the same feelings, thoughts, wishes and desires. What stays always are therefore universal divine moral values: Do to your fellow being as you wish they'd do unto you. To each according to their capacity to receive. ...Compassion, applied Wisdom, Intelligence, Truthfulness, Trustworthiness, Brotherliness, LOVE. Regardless of "tribe" or "descent".

Charlene doesn't need to mention Akans, or "these Akans", in order to drive her points home. The glaring fact is that it is only "these Akans" who have been indulging in the practice of openly thrashing, insulting, abusing, looking down upon, and damning Northerners on a daily basis in cyberspace and elsewhere. You don't get Ewes and Gas doing that even if some hold prejudicial views about Northerners. I don't! The former, the Ewes, were indeed longer sufferers of these denigration in cyberspace and elsewhere - even in the media in Ghana - until recently when Northerners were added. I deliberately left any defence of them in my piece, "These Akans" and their hangers-on. Most kept mute when the abuses were being rained on we Ewes. Besides, they must be bold to come out to deal with the problem themselves. Charlene, a lady, has come out to deal with it the way only a woman can: turn her feminine weakness into a weapon of attrition with her literary style. My method was the way of the warrior! Yes, the War Lord approach cos I can indeed deliver devastating blows to the culprits.
Btw, Komla, don't be silly and put that simplistic viewpoint into my mouth. On this thread alone, I had already written enough to show that I don't hold such an opinion. I even accused the Northerners for holding prejudicial views too, amongst themselves and against the rest of of. My very first post encapsulated that complex view.

Find yourself a copy of CPP's 7-year Development Plan (1963/4 – 1969/70) and you'll see that Nkrumah intended to make the Northern Region the breadbasket of Ghana among his many other plans to bring equitable development to all regions of Ghana. The Northern Region had a special place in Nkrumah's heart!
You can choose to make tribal-based appeals to Mahama or join those of us who are trying to carry forth the Osagyefo's vision. Mahama and the Northern elites don't care about you. They don't build their houses in the North. They don't spend their vacations in the North. They are Accra boys who go to "chill" in South Africa, London, Dubai and the USA. Wize up now. Neither NDC nor NPP will help the North develop. They will always use you to win votes and forget you afterwards.
History cannot be whitewashed. Let not tribe blind you to the truth: Dombo was a traitor who threw in his lot with the Matemeho nation-wreckers; Limann was a fake who changed nothing and was eaten up by his own mistakes. He too was an Accra boy.
Come to CPP, the intelligent choice for the intelligent Ghanaian!

My dear sister, the title of your article realy describes you,you are really of a difference,i like every piece of your article, its rather unfortunate, but somtimes other peoples misdeed goes a long way to affects other innocent people, for instance, there are conflicts in every region in Ghana, but when its northern, its very serious, even pregnant women would have their stomach split into two,(ref. konkomba-Nanumba/Dagomba conflict)In the south when there is chieftancy conflict its always the family members who are involve, but in the north its different,(ref.Bawku conflict,a southner was just killed just because he is on free terms with someone from the opposing group)the educated elites would go and stire up troubles only to run to the south, illigaly acquire arms & weapons to inflame the situation.Whilst some southern chiefs have seen the ineffevtivness of the government and has therefore innitiating educational scolarship and other developmental programmes for their people, for ten consecutive years or so,people of Dagbon are allowing themselves to be manipulated by this days good for nothing politicians who all have their homes in Accra instead of any of the northern cities to make it beatiful,Whilst southerners are willing to marry northerners, some have conditioned marriage to religion,so far there is no known influential Northerner who has a charity or offering any meaningful thing to the youth of the norht,so i think the youth of the north should start to avoid the mistakes of their leaders because they have caused the failure of our innocent bretherens(ref. It sounds to me like you are trying to overcome your "inferiority complex". Please, if that' the case, then my advise is that, don't let people define who you are, ok? We are in the 21st century and things have completely changed from the colonial era! What's wrong with being a Northerner or Southerner? Don't let that kind of colonial divisions bother you, please! You MUST be who you are, and not how people define you. Your article is not very clear to me, but it looks like you are trying to prove to the whole world that "hei, I'm a Northerner so please, respect me too", Right? To prove to who, girl? If you ever travel or happen to live in the western world, you will find out how people of color are sometimes treated. Yet, Who cares? Black people don't let that kind of discrimination define them. Nobody goes about writing and begging people to respect them, because they are from Ghana or are black? Hei NO!! You prove your point through your confidence level. So please, don't have any kind of inferiority complex in you, ok?. BE WHO YOU ARE, and be confident in whatever you do, and that's it! You will be good to go, Girl! Thanks.

This article is one of the best I have ever read on this website, especially the latter part.Even though 1 monkey spoils all other monkies but that of the northern sector is unbearable. If an unfortunate event occurs between two people in which 1 of them is a northerner, all northerners are tagged with that misfortune. Why should it be so? We are all different so that general tagging should be stoped.

Labelling other tribe or ethnic as inferior is the the Plantationist mentality of master and servant doctorine. Labelling is a social-construct for dominance. I feel your frustration: I understand what you are going through; don't let this stereotype define you. You have raised a geographical-dichotomy of the natural endoment and cultural differences of the south and the north to make your point. These northern resources can be harnessed to propel an unstoppable development and growth in the north, if only SADA executes a good agenda. Let us focus for a monumental change of the north with all hands on deck. Shalom!

Princess, see yourself not as an exception but a laudable model exemplifying the Population.
Let those who indulge ignorance to dehumanize others sit back in awe at your wisdom. It is not the physicalities of our environment that define us. It is our minds and hearts and what they lead us to do and say.
Cheer up, ideal woman! Your maker is proud for making you, and all your kin. In fact, when He made you and all others, he did not distinguish between you and any others. He made all of you, your kin and the others as one group. He called all us Humans.
It is our departure from the Maker's direction that has made some of us see so many differences among us, and blame others for their perceived points of diversion.
In our human frailty, some of us conveniently attempt to diffuse the discomfort from our shortfalls by searching for some comparative advantage over perceived shortfalls in others. It is more like using any such perceived comparative edge over others in making up for our emotional imbalance from our own imperfections.
That is like feeding off one's own withering self. A form of self-canibalization...
I have always maintained that Providence would continue to deny us real freedom and luxury of progressive life, for as long as we continue to denounce racism but indulge in bigotry, tribalism or ethnocentrism to dehumanize some we share the same color and space with.
Keep working hard to help teach us how to be more human. Bravo!
But remember, bigots exist in all environments.
Long Live Ghana!!!

Hey Charlene,
A very touching article!
I hope people of other tribes will read and see how some of us are hurting our own fellow citizens.
Coming on here to insult a whole tribe because of one person is uncalled for. There's good and bad in every tribe so we should try and be more accommdating in our views. If you feel like insulting that individual alone as a person, you have every right to, but let's leave tribalism aside because we hurt other peolple who have no say in or influence on the situation that may be in discussion.
Good article, Charlene.
I wish you had included an e-mail address.
I would have loved to get in touch with you.
Take care.

Take heart Charlene! The north is bread basket of Ghana or is contrib uting immensely to the feeding of the nation. There are entrepreneurs from the north who are fabulously rich. We have the phenomenon of ethnic stereotyping which is not limited to only people of the north. In terms of leadership of the country the north has had more than its fair share (Western Region- Dr Kwame Nkrumah; Brong Ahafo-Dr Kofi Busia;Northern Region-Dr Hilla Liman;Volta Region-;Central Region- Professor Atta-Mills;and Northern Region -John Mahama).
