Well, let me say, there are no "Gun Lobbyists" in Ghana, unlike the National Rifle Association in the U.S. I think the largest problem in the U.S. is how its mentally unstable lunatics easily get hold of guns. Lunatics with guns are a toxic mix. Tighter gun-control laws will save a lot of lives in America.

We are very upset with the embassy apologizing , when will men of courage stand up and speak the truth , intimidating a whole embassy into retracting and not speaking up is very sad . we dont need cowards here .This no time for pampering or being nice to idiot mahama for niceties sake, call a spade a spade and let him know this is the worst president Ghana could ever entertain . Just look at his reshuffle and his cabinet together with his choice of appointees . I say to you they would be better off in a Jerry Springer show just to emphasize the extreme stupidity that exists in every country , just that in the USA such characters would never make it to the White house like in Ghana . A president with 17 children and God knows how many women claims he has good intentions , is honest and with integrity , his ministers are busy looting the coffers like homies from the Bronx let into the fort Knox vaults . Chief directors of ministries who have their hands our requesting for bribes for no work done . Party officials like gen mosquito and boateng gyan supporting this ludicrous govt just because it keeps their party in power . The opposition being infected by this ndc madness so is on an ego trip of personality cult heave-hoes instead of being united so the two strongest personalities can not se that its best that whoever wins chooses the other as his vice . All of them together say we Akan nationalists are merely tribalists as they don't understand or see the difference . Yes its a sorry state of affairs and in this tragedy we don't know whether to cry or laugh . There are so many idiots in the cabinet and corridors of power that it makes one wonder how come things got turned upside down then we remember it started with jj rawlings and his anti Akan hate agenda leading to the ongoing discrimination of the Akans so our wise men and diaspora do not have the opportunity to assist in finding solutions or participating in governance . yes we have a situation whereby idiots keep congratulating themselves on no work done and the mess they have so gleefully caused . Jerry Springer no need to search for an audience or candidates for your show just visit the presidency and you will have enough material for the next 50 years .

The National Rifle Association has become a "One eye giant" that cannot be controlled. The are telling the people in the US that owing a gun is their constitutional right and from where did that right originate?
Does it make sense for each human in a nation like the US to own a gun as if the entire nation is in the midst of a civil war?
Owing a gun was inserted in the US constitution because when the settlers came to the "New World" and took control of it, the only way they could defend themselves against the natives was the gun. Trust me, that is the genesis of this gun foolishness that is now sending innocent lives to their untimely grave.
Can they do anything about it? Absolutely NO. Why? Because the NRA will resist any attempt to do that. In the eyes of the US, what is good about Ghana? Absolutely nothing and they see us as uncouth hordes of savages, brutes, uncivilized sub-humans who do not even sleep in houses. I am not making this up because there are people in the US who think Africa is a vast jungle with only animals roams the plains.

Gun manufacturers who want to continue selling created the NRA and also created an imaginary scenario that there could be a race war hence the need for guns to protect "whites" from "angry black men" who will come in to rape white women. Movies like King Kong are made every year to send the message of this man made fear all in the name of making profits from gun sales. But now, the monster is on the lose and no one knows how to tame it.
Gun control legislation could be a powerful tool that is feared could kill the industry in face of morality.
And as we speak, the fear mongering is on the rise unabated.

Megan,
When was the last time you visited Ghana?
While I agree with you that the Western media doesn't always paint the most accurate picture of most situations in Africa, I beg to differ with your assertion that Ghana has a better grip on gun control than the US.
Ghana as compared to the US has the most Armed robbery cases on record.
Have you seen the atrocities these vermins using guns cause on our highways, not to mention what they do to women they find in the houses they invade?
There's no single day that passes without hearing or reading about armed robbers wreaking havoc on the highways or invading and raping women in their homes.
How many armed robberies do you read about in the US considering the huge number of guns in the US?
Go live in Ghana for 6 months and I'll bet you be a victim of armed robbery before you come back and live in your comfort zone here. That if they don't bring back your body in a coffin (casket).
Ghana's stance on gun control is just 'lip service' to give people the false belief that they live in safety. The security forces in Ghana has now been reduced to something akin to the 'boys scout' and 'girls guide' over here in the Western World. The security forces don't have any control over these armed robbers who can strike anyone and anywhere with impunity. Boys under
14 years of age are even taking advantage of the lax rules on gun control by the government to take up armed robbery as a 'recreational activity'.
For a developing nation, even if there's just 1.8 people dying for every 100,000 people, it is way too many.
If your statistics is anything to go by, then it's because Ghanaians are by nature, peaceful people. When I was growing up Ghana in the late 70's, armed robbery was so foreign that the worst you could hear of somebody dying of gunshot wounds were the accidental deaths of local hunters when one hunter inadvertently shot a fellow hunter.
So the low number of deaths from guns wasn't as a result of the government's stance on gun control. Ghanaians are/were squeamish to spill the blood of a fellow human being, coupled with our staunch belief of life after death and evil spirits and ghosts. Even the most educated Ghanaian believed in those folklores that if you killed someone, that person's spirit would haunt you for the rest of your life.
So until recently, those beliefs were still taken to heart. Now we have our neighbours who have experienced brutal civil wars where unspeakable atrocities were committed in these wars living amongst us. Some of these ECOWAS migrants are not afraid to kill or murder another human being with guns and with the economic hardships assailing Ghana, some Ghanaians have borrowed a page from them to wreak havoc on their fellow citizens and the government has this nonchalant attitude towards these unfortunate situation. Like I said earlier, armed robberies are more rampant than you've been made to believe.

Flaunting its uniquely American ideology of liberty, egalitarianism, rugged individualism, populism and laissez-faire. And this whole thing about negative reporting about Africa etc. Please tell me what positive news you want reported from Ghana? - In this era of human development we as a people cannot still provide electricity, water and basic sanitary conditions for our communities. Is funny how some of us think the western media should go and report on the few nice buildings in Accra or a few million dollar homes in Ghana?-what will be the purpose of that when the vast majority cannot afford a decent meal. When kids still go to school under trees. Are you kidding me? Folks there is nothing to report but dirty communities and kids walking around bare footed in red sand whiles the leader shamelessly steal and steal and steal. No shame. We a bunch of wicked, evil people period. Is only a wicked man who can steal millions from his people, live in luxury whiles the rest suffer for lack of basics. That is the story of the Black race including even Black American leaders.

I cannot wholly agree with you on this one. Any ways I give you thumbs up for the accentuation alone of this scintillating piece. How sweet a young lady you could be. However, you raised some serious issues here which I will not let you get away with. Firstly, America is entitled to whatever they report about Africa provided facts are not distorted. As a nation, you don't expect the American to write your success story for you and I even wonder if there is any. I cannot think of anything remarkably significant about Ghana or Africa that is worth reporting for public consumption on the international platform. By her generosity, Mother Nature has endowed Ghana with everything that we need to succeed but we always wait fot the whiteman to come and tell us what to do with all these riches. Talk of Gold, diamond, arable lands, able water bodies, timber oil and what have you. Or do you want them white people to tell the world about the free school uniforms, the free sanitary pads and tampons, and stuff like that? I beg to differ.
Now on the gun issues I bet Ghana would be one of the worse offenders as fars the control measures are concerned. As of now there are so many local made guns on the market without the government not knowing the hideouts of the manufacturers overthere in Ghana. The recent chieftaincy disputes in Yendi and Bimbilla is just a wake call as to how we have guns in the hands of lunatics. The issue of gun control is now a menace in Ghana, a failed state where road accidents alone claim more lives everyday than Somailia and Iraq.
For me, the painfully truth is that ,the Blackman, apart from the area of sports and the entertainment industry, is almost as useless as anything as far as technology and scientific innovations are concerned. Let the American do what they do, for the African has no success story to tell. All that we can do best is to kill each other over trivialities like disputes over guinea fowl. We talk plenty but have little to show.

This is wishful thinking. We copy blindly and not even able to distinguish between apples and oranges. You should rather be warning against the dangers of our unbridled appetite of copying everything foreign, especially American. At least the US sees firsthand the menace of guns proliferation and the absence of stricter gun control laws everyday. This is their living reality and they are striving to enact sensible gun control laws against massive opposition from gun lobbyists. Ghana is far from where the USA finds itself today but eventually we'll get where they're now. We have a country where there's no effective means of citizens identification let alone know who has a gun or guns. Go to the internet and you'll find just how easy it is to acquire a gun in Ghana. Without any statistical data there can be no background check. If Ghana wishes to teach the Americans about effective gun control then we should start by learning from the Americans how they started and implemented an effective citizenship identification system from scratch because they've already been where we are now. I don't see how we can teach the US about gun control because we're no trailblazers, pacesetters nor innovators. We're simply copy-cats who can't even copy it right sometimes. But thanks for having such a positive outlook.

Don't defend your neighbor's right to defend himself with necessary force and he or she will not be there to defend you in your hour of need. We do not live in an imaginary world. It is a God-given right to defend yourself, your property and your neighbor. The Founders of the USA understood this well. That is why they rejected King George's Gun Control efforts. Governments have been the biggest murderers of their own people throughout history. The 20the Century broke all previous records. See https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/MURDER.HTM for a scholarly treatment of that subject. If you cannot figure out the probable result when you let a potential enemy decide what weapons you may possess you are probably on your way out of the gene pool.
