Dear Readers,
There are some who complained to me about not seeing this piece, which is the one I actually intended for publication on Ghanaweb.
In addition, the published one contained too many typos/grammatical errors that I needed to go back and correct as many of them as I possibly could, the reason for the errors being that I had to respond quickly to Mr. Philip Kobina Baidoo, Jr.'s piece before or just as it was about to disappear into the archives. We also needed to include certain facts we missed in the earlier piece that demanded readers' immediate attention.
Let me assure readers that the evidence we provide here is merely a tip of the iceberg. We deem this public debate both edifying and enlightening.
I hope those who missed this will avail themselves of the opportunity to read this one.

This unending public debate is illogical, boring and uncalled for. It has no relevance in the dynamics of today. Stop theorizing and building castles in Spain and instead make the bee line to Ghana and with those theories secure a timely rescue for the moribund CPP. I'm convinced that would be more rewarding and gratifying than the logo ligi theorization. Most importantly, when it proves successful and the theories are putting food on the table for millions of hungry Ghanaians, it'd serve as a fitting memorial in the homeland for our eternal ancestor, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Francis, I believe you misunderstand Baidoo's central argument and these are my reasons. Baidoo simply argues that capitalism, as being practiced in the West, is far superior to any other economic system including Nkrumah's brand of socialism that has been unleashed on other societies. I believe he argued that leaving indiduals to produce the wealth in any given society has been proven to be far superior to command type economies such as was practiced in China, the Soviet Union and Cuba and present day North Korea. He used the living standards in capitalist societies vis avis so called communist societies as support for his position. I don't think he sought to use all the treatises of Maxism to make his straight forward argument. His was a practical observation of the two systems and their variations as he has studied them.
For example, I maintain that we should give the thanks to the cocoa farmers for providing the wealth to enable Nkrumah to build the schools, but not to Nkrumahism. This is simply because without the wealth generated by the farmers, Nkumah would have failed miserably. And this was what happened when the price of cocoa plummeted. He did not have the millions to spend on the projects anymore.
Of course, capitalism has shortcomings as you have rightly pointed out, but on the whole, it far superior to any other system if it is well regulated. This is not far from what Baidoo is saying.
I concede that your pieces are well researched and string cited, but what convinces folks like me is what is happening in the real world not what Nkrumah or Marx wrote somewhere. America regulates industries, but allows individuals to create the wealth like the Cocoa did for Nkrumah and before him. The state farms he created and his restrictions on freedoms were wrong headed and these were the reasons he was overthrown. I find it difficult to accept the argument by Nkrumahist that without him, majority of our citizens will not have been educated. This is because Nigerians were equally educated though they did not have Nkrumah and his isms. Good night Francis.

Kwadwo,
You misunderstood both Baidoo, Jr. and I.
Nkrumah never practiced socialism. Nkrumah's greatest influences as far as his development and economic policies went came from John Maynard Keynes, his "mixed economy." I have given enough evidence to explain why this is so.
WHAT YOU SHOULD ALSO KNOW IS THAT NKRUMAH'S "MIXED ECONOMY" IS THE MOST WIDELY USED ECONOMIC MODEL IN THE WORLD TODAY. YOU ALSO KEEP MENTIONING MARX WHEN MOST OF NKRUMAH'S ECONOMIC POLICIES WERE A MIXTURE OF THE IDEAS OF ADAM SMITH, KARL MARX, JOHN K. GALBRAITH, AND SEVERAL OTHERS. WHY DO YOU GUYS KEEP SINGLING OUT ONLY MARX IN ASSOCIATION WITH NKRUMAH? I DON'T GET IT. BESIDES, THERE ARE INFLUENTIAL MARXIST POLITICAL ECONOMISTS AND MARXIST PHILOSOPHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WHO HAVE DISMISSED NKRUMAH'S ECONOMIC POLICIES AS HAVING NOTHING TO DO WITH SOCIALISM. HAVE YOU GUYS STUDIED SOCIALISM/COMMUNISM AS IT IS/WAS PRACTICED IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD AT ALL? IF YOU HAD, YOU WILL DARE NOT CALL NKRUMAH'S ECONOMIC POLICIES SOCIALISM. I KNOW YOU GUYS DO THIS MERELY FOR POLITICAL CONVIENIENCE, NOT FOR THE FACTS OF HISTORICAL.
What I believe to be superior to both capitalism and socialism is the Nordic Model, a mixture of socialism and capitalism. You may also call it the Nordic Model "mixed economy." You will understand later why Nkrumah’s economic model has won the day and why the economic model he pursued is what the rest of the world uses today.
That said, Philip Kobina Baidoo, Jr. also grossly misunderstood Kwame Nkrumah. I will ask you both to go back and read Nkrumah's 7-Year Development Plan. Please also go back and read my first rejoinder to Baidoo in relation to the 7-Year Development Plan and see what the intentions behind it were. As for Baidoo he had no clue what he was talking. I guess I have to take readers’ advice to ignore him.
This has nothing to do with Nigerians or Somalis or Togolese or cocoa. Just go back and read in detail all the authoritative references I gave.
You and Baidoo, Jr. both misunderstood Nkrumah. AND I DON'T THINK YOU GUYS TAKE MAKE TIME TO VERIFY THE REFERENCES I CITE IN MY WORKS. ON MY PART I GO AHEAD TO CONFIRM WHAT A WRITER I READER SAYS UNLESS I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THE TOPIC HE/SHE DISCUSSES OR I HAVE THE FACTS ALREADY. WHAT BAIDOO, JR. DID WAS MERELY TO ASSEMBLE LOADS OF LIES AND PRESENT THEM AS FACTS. HE CAN'T DO THAT WITH ME.
Thanks.

Baidoo must be cringing and tearful for being shred into smithreens by Kwarteng. However, that is the beauty of intellectual discourse and intercourse. It is a give and take affair of generating ideas so that we get enlightened. It is a pity that most people on this forum are not academics or deep-thinkers so they see Kwarteng's writings as drudgery as some constipation to the brain and perhaps a diarrhoea of words. So many ideas are excavated in an eclectic way in how Francis writes and I am going to archive this well-referenced piece of academic scholarship which is full of gems of knowledge, a real expose. However, may I draw Kwarteng's attention to the fact that putting such well-crafted essay on ghanaweb is equivalent to the biblical analogy of casting pearl before swine who would not know its value and the pearl may land in their stomach or omasum or abomasum like that of Adjoa Wangara! To me personally, capitalism has embedded within it, its own seeds of destruction because it is a bubble and unsustainable. It is immoral in many respects because it is anchored on Smith's amoral self-interest of fleecing the poor if you happen to be top dog and you have the wherewithal to make things happen or you hold the end of the whip. Capitalism fuelled the ignominious slave trade, and is the basis of an unequal playing field in global trade. The best economic model is the mixed economy and the Welfare states of the Scandinavians and Canada, and India where healthcare and education(merit goods) are heavily subsidised as a way of wealth redistribution. The Efficiency market hypothesis conflates capitalism but I think that Walrasian fallacy has been disproved by many a recession which even the most sophisticated mathematical models have failed to predict. We recognise that Economics is not an exact or precise science because human beings are capricious, mercurial, kaleidoscopic, and unpredictable as to be predicted. Hence the market crashes and need for Keynesian market interventions. The market system based on Adam Smith's invisble hand is a ruthless one of survival of the fittest and inhumane caprice of making the filthy lucre. Arbitrage is not bad but taken to excesses, it is theft. No wonder Muslems do not practise usury or charge interest on capital in Islamic banking so that they can spread wealth around. However, that concept only works among people of high integrity in order not to have high rates of default. Capitalistic markets crash because of issues of information asymmetry, incomplete contracts, Herbert Simon's bounded rationality or inability of man to have complete and perfect knowledge of the future, among other matters. Marxism and all isms are fallible just like capitalism. What we need is a middle ground, capitalism with a human face, or Marxism with recognition of fundamental human rights. As to Darwinism, I will reserve my comments because no ape or monkey has evolved to become human yet. Equally, Einstein was a man so he was fallible. What he did achieve was based on what Kepler, Newton, Leibniz, Descartes, and others had done in the past, so it is more important to build on his achievements. I believe we need our own philosophy of life carved by us and by visionary leaders in Ghana.

Prof. Sakyi,
There is no argument that as an economist yourself, Prof. Sakyi, you will have a better appreciation of what I have chosen to do here with this here.
I think you have given us the most sophisticated summary so far as I am concerned. You reach deeper into the well of economic philosophy, as it were expected of a thinker with roots in economic theory, history of philosophy, history of science, and history of knowledge.
As for Adam Smith's "invisible hand" and its purported relationship to free market I have more to say about them later.
And your comment here:
"We recognize that Economics is not an exact or precise science because human beings are capricious, mercurial, kaleidoscopic, and unpredictable as to be predicted. Hence the market crashes and need for Keynesian market interventions."
The quote above underscores one of the potent subtexts of my essay. Some do not even realize that economics is merely part of speculative philosophy and therefore not an inductive or deductive science. I made a subtle allusion to this idea in the piece. We shall say more about this later.
However, I will be glad if readers take the time to plough through your insightful summary, Prof. Sakyi. I think that will greatly help to ease some of the exegetical tension off readers who may have difficulty grasping the piece in its fullest philosophical capacity.
I am happy you elaborate on the essential arguments I advance in this piece. I hope you will be here as we explore other areas of economic theory under this controversial topic.
I have seen some are using your name to cause mischief on Ghanaweb (I am guessing).
Thanks.

I wonder why this unyielding attempts to "poopoo" the achievements of our first President and what he sttod for and did for our dear nation. Without a doubt Mr. Kwarteng's piece reveals the scope and the depth of his readings. And I don't doubt that Mr. P. K. Baidoo, Jr. is also well read. We should count ourselves lucky to have them as compatriots.
My main criticism is not about the length of the article, nor about the division of global political ideologies into capitalistic, socialistic, Nkrumahist mix model, Nordic model, and the Beijing model.
I seriously am of the opinion that there is what I call the Al Gore model which is a frank and clear-eyed assessment of the emerging forces
that are reshaping our globe as I write.
In his recent book - The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change, Mr. Gore talks of
1. ever-increasing economic globalization, which he calls "Earth Inc." - an integrated, holistic entity with a brand new and different relationship to capital, labor, consumer markets, and national governments than in the past
2. Worldwide digital communications, Internet, and computer revolutions connecting intelligent machines, robots, ubiquitous sensors, and databases
3. Shifting balance of global political, economic, and military power from US dominated system to one with multiple emerging centres of power, and from political systems to markets.
4. Unsustainable growth in consumption, pollution flows, and depletion of the world's resources of topsoil, freshwater, and living things.
5. We are facing a radical disruption of the relationships between human beings and the Earth's ecosystems, along with the transformation of enery systems, agriculture and transportation worldwide.
6. Genomic, biotechnology, neuroscience, and microbiology revolutions are radically changing the fields of medicine, agriculture, and molecular science, putting control of evolution in human hands.
And this the one we need to pay attention to.
While we argued, and insulted each other, not reading and researching, they were genetically engineering our biotic elements.
This is what Ghana's capitalists, socialists, and Nkrumahists need to worry about.

Dear Brother Marcus,
Thanks for your contributions.
I believe you know the issues you raise are dear to my heart, and Nkrumah created institutions to advance scientific research across several areas. Nkrumah would be pushing for these ideas were he to be alive today.
Besides, I have generally advanced these ideas you summarize here in many of my articles, and therefore, I wonder why you are bringing up again (they are important though).
Also you can't do any of these things you attribute to Al Gore against the backdrop of the winner-takes-all capitalism Ghana practices today, where insults, unpatriotism, kleptomania, ethnocentrism, indiscipline, weal leadership, stealing, and universal corruption have become the new faces of Ghanaian politics.
Have you asked yourself why Nkrumah achieved so much in so little time? Have you asked yourself why we are selling off his industries to foreigners who have become exceedingly wealthy on their account while the masses go hungry and become poor?
Have you asked yourself why Nkrumah achieved so much in the midst of terrorism, bombing campaigns, assassination attempts, etc? How much did Nkrumah steal from Ghana as a leader? Do you think we can achieve anything worthwhile as a people with the rampant stealing going on in all spheres of life across Ghana today?
What made Nkrumah so visionary as opposed to those who succeeded him? Don't you think Ghana and Africa need visionary leaders as Nkrumah to pursue what Al Gore is saying? How much did Al Gore himself achieve as Vice President in the specific areas he discusses in his book (apart from lying that he "invented" the internet)?
And you will agree with me that what Al Gore is saying is nothing new. Again, Nkrumah's ideas are as relevant today as they were yesterday. Even Karl Marx predicted globalization and the failures of international capitalism more than a century back. Others like Karl Popper, John von Neumann, Isaac Asimov (all late) predicted Al Gore’s ideas in their novelistic (and non-fictional) writings. They are nothing new. Nkrumah’s many writings and speeches foreshadow many of these ideas.
Finally, don’t forget that Western (and Japanese) scientists are still trying to understand the mechanism behind Ancient Egyptian mummification, just as NASA astronauts and Western engineers/scientists are trying to understand the mechanisms behind Ancient Egyptian architecture (Pyramids, etc). Further, Western historians and archeologists still undertake vigorous research into ancient (Western) thought, among many others, to either enhance or to provide better understanding and insights into improving contemporary society. We in Africa hardly do this because we think technology and science and creative ideas are the preserves of the present and future. Dead wrong! Sometimes some of the innovative ideas we need for astounding discoveries are right there in the past (watch this one example: www.ted.com/talks/ron_eglash_on_african_fractals?language=en).
Remember that all the so-called Asian Tigers are already into most of the things Al Gore is saying. Nkrumah was friends with some of the leaders of these countries (Asian Tigers) and his policies then paralleled what had made these countries great today.
America is great today because of what the Founding Fathers and contemporary ones like Bill Clinton did (the Human Genome Project was carried out under Bill Clinton). Therefore, when I deal with Nkrumah I am also collaterally dealing with important issues of science and technology.
What I chose to do with my rejoinder to Mr. Baidoo, Jr. was to argue for a leadership as visionary, technocratic, scientific, technological, and prescient in Ghana today as Nkrumah was otherwise pursuing Al Gore's ideas will be a pipe dream. This has been the essence of my articles on Nkrumah. It has nothing to do with me stuck with the past. If you had read any of my series "Dr. Kofi Dompere On Nkrumah's Scientific Thinking," you would have known by now why Nkrumah is as relevant today in Ghanaian and African politics if we can pursue what Al Gore says.
Please go back and read my pieces on Dr. Kofi Kissi Dompere to learn more about what he is doing with Nkrumah’s ideas in the areas of science, technology, unity, nation-building, development economics, etc.
Stay tuned for more on Nkrumah.

Long grammar, ! And you expect people to read all that.?
The idiot and fake (so-claimed) English teacher in USA, Francis Kwarteng only copied series of rubbish, inflated it with thousands of grammatical mistakes and just pasted it as a article.
I think I will rather read Ayowa Dankwa for culture, language and wisdom than read all the books of Karl Marx.
Oyokoba read whatever you choose to read that is none of our business or our cups of tea, some of us will go to any lengths for the opportunity to read Kwarteng's articles on Karl Max.
Oyokoba, I feel sorry for you that you don't realize how we are fast going through transformation.
Tumantu was a moniker given to a chief in Winneba who was stubborn. The late chief was my uncle.
Kwesi Atta Sakyi, what sense do you think you are making here with your bloody Tumantu?

Nkrumah was just a read sickle communist and nothing more.
What ever Nkrumah was by your definition(s), he was a true Ghanaian, a TRUE PATRIOT ND NON- BOMB THROWING.
He created and lifted the image of Ghana not like some ignorant, self-centered coup plotters.
The red sickle communists called "Krubah" was not a true Ghanaian; his father was a crew member from Liberia. Have you ever heard him talk about his father? It is also likely that the so-called Nkruma's mother wasn't his biol ...

The misguided and ignorant Mossi born Mahmoud like his fellow quasi-intellectuals is always lying and distorting facts. The well-known tribes in Liberia are Grebo,Bassa,Gissi,Loma,Vai,Krahn and Kru.
That narrow-minded and biased quasi-intellectual called Philip Kobina Baidoo has already fled this forum.Francis, don't your precious time.
