Laid down rules and regulations should not be compromised no matter what. Muslims can leave mission school and go to their Islamic school. How long has this trend been going on and I do not remember any Muslim who has been converted into Christianity by attending morning devotion. Those who support the Muslims, should ask Ghanaians who attended Ahmadiya Secondary school. Morning devotion are done in Islam and Christians who attended this institution never complained of their "rights" being infringed upon.
Despite the fact that the Churches who established these school no longer have authority over them, the laid down procedures still holds and there should be no compromised whatsoever.
As long as a Muslim choose to attend a mission school, he/she is obliged to accept the rules and regulations of the school. They know where they are going and if so, why should they complain? If you go to Rome, do what the Romans do. The best option for the Muslims is to go to only Islamic school and they can tell the government to build more for them.
I love what the Catholic Bishops came out with today and I wish they will not budge.

The world doesn't know any more what the islamic world wants. They want to build the biggest mosques in all countries, but would do everything to prevent Churches from being built in their countries. They want the Christian schools to bend the roles to favour them. Why does a muslim send their kids to Christian schools when they know very well that would compromise the faith of their wards. Except maybe it is being done deliberately to cause anarchy just as they have been doing in the Western world. They want sharia laws to run along side the laws of the land. Now in Ghana, they want to wear a hijab to school. Funny isn't it. Imagine turning up one morning at an islamic school with a cross around your neck as a Christian student. It would be the doing of the Lord if you get out
alive. Why should Christian schools change the law to accommodate those who have low regards of them.

Way back in the '90s, I was the sole person who took up this vexatious issue on Okyeame. I am therefore at least 2 decades ahead of this debate. There is therefore a lot I can say but just a brief commentary.
As a non-believer in the Christian myths, I refused to attend morning devotion when I went to Sixth Form at Mawuli School, a church founded school. If course, the EP Church was not still funding; rather the govt. A roll call was made one day and they staryted caning those absent, to my utter shock and dchagrin! Of course, I refused to go and be caned in spite of all the talk of suspension or dismissal. Suspend or dismiss who? I was going to raise their hell for them if the school authority were that stupid to try something like that on me. Luckily for them, their was a small aluta the next weekend when we returned from the school farm to find the "borbor" - red-red - undersize. Subsequent investigations into the disturbance linked it to the caning and the school authorities were upbraided for their action. That was the end of any plan to deal with those of us who refused to be caned.
The secondary school I attended didn't have morning devotions but moral/civic lessons in each individual class each day before classes begin. A topic is chosen for discussion each day. There was vespers each Sunday though. Even that was optional at a time; until the freedom was abused.

Ghana is a DEFACTO Christian state whether you and Borkor like it or not; where have you two been? DAAAAH!!!! Prayers are said at every state function, in the schools, national prayer vigils are held regularly for the nation Ghana by its over 70% Christian citizens to ensure that its "thin" unity does NOT unravel... There are churches at every imaginable corner in Ghana. Even the very small town I come from has about 10 or more denominations of Christianity... So what is your beef?
Don't you all know that Ghana is technically in the center of the earth and if rotated would aligned right under Israel?
THERE IS NO WAY 16% OF THE POPULATION IS GOING TO DICTATE TO OVER 70% OF THE POPULATION TO CHANGE THEIR BELIEFS TO SUIT THEM.... THE 16% MUST CONFORM TO THE WAYS OF THE 70% WHEN IT COMES TO CERTAIN THINGS...LIFE IS NOT FAIR....
Re taking off Hijab for a driver's license- a license to drive is a privilege not a right- in the US many states require the women to take of their hijabs for drivers license photos just as they do not allow one to smile when taking those pictures--THEY DON'T HAVE A CHOICE....
MUSLIMS MUST NOT EXPECT TO HAVE THEIR WAY ALL THE TIME....THEIR RELIGION IS SIMPLY TOO IMPERIALISTIC, VIOLENT AND ARCHAIC- IT IS THEM WHO MUST CHANGE FOR ONCE....
THE BEAUTY OF GHANA IS THAT THE MOSLEM IS 100% FREE TO WORSHIP AS HE OR SHE CHOOSES....THEY MUST ATTEND THEIR OWN MADRASSAS IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO CONFORM TO THE CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES ENFORCED AT THESE MISSION SCHOOLS.
Please go to Saudi Arabia and see if Christians can even make any demands or modern day Libya..THEY WOULD BE BEHEADED!!!!
BOKOR, WE DON'T NEED YOU TO QUESTION WHETHER GHANA IS A SECULAR STATE OR NOT...... LEAVE WELL ALONE!!!!!

Many people in America have been impressed with the absence of religious intolerance in Ghana anytime they hear of the killings by Boko Haram and Al Shabaab in Nigeria and Somalia, I proudly remind them of how Christians and Muslims get along fine in Ghana, pointing out that our Black Stars are made up Muslims and Christians.
But all that is about to change with this asinine morning devotion mandate to enforce rules and regulations in all mission schools that will make it obligatory for all students, whether Christians or Muslims to comply.
Why now? This is really stupid, coming at a time Islamic extremists are using decapitation, immolation, and other terroristic acts to recruit young people to join their cause.
Please replace the morning devotion with morning singing of the National Anthem, pledge of allegiance and occasional recitation of poems to inculcate patriotism.

If a school is designated as christian, they should continue with their morning devotion, otherwise all public schools open the morning with the national anthem or something else that is not religious. You cannot ask religious schools to remove the prayers, etc. Ghana is a predominantly christian country, and we should be proud of this while at the same time allowing space for moslems as done previously, for instance we can help moslems to improve their schools, or attend schools with no religious orientation.

AN AGENDA TO SOW SEEDS OF DISCORD IN GHANA!
My analysis of events so far indicate there are various schemes to sow discord in this country. Some people have refused to accept that this country belongs to all of us. Their target is a certain section of Ghana bcos they cannot fanthom how a person from a certain part of the country can also be the President of the Republic of Ghana.
U listen to them on radio and television and they just call the President 'Mahama no a or ti hor nu" and this goes for grown ups and better educated people who should know better. When President Kufuor was President you will hear supposedly Akans drawing the attention of presenters to the fact that some contributor had refered to President Kufuor without saying 'oman panyin'
Strikes and demonstrations have not brought down the Government of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Supreme Commander of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Now they want to create a situation of religious strife by raising an unnecessary issue and wanting to violate some other people's constitutional right in accordance with Article 21(1)(c).
As part of the scheme, the President of the Republic has been publicly defied by his own appointee in the person of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service. They are waiting to see what nect the President will do.
These people 'refuse' to understand there are public schools funded by the Government of Ghana. For instance, St. Aquinas cannot be said to be a Catholic school though it was initially established by the catholic church; now it is funded wholly by the Government of Ghana and so is in the public school system. Likewise T.I. Ahmadiya in KUmasi is a public school and so you cannot ask force a non-muslim student there to go for Jum'uat prayers on Friday.
Bodies like the catholic church should know that there is no compulsion in religion and the best way to win a person over is by persuasion and not intimidation. It will be very absurd to tell a Catholic nun that she cannot wear her habits and or tell a Catholic priest not to wear his cassock. It is for him to decide when the cassock should be won and for what purpose.
We the muslims will not fall into the trap. We shall use all means to ensure that reason prevails over this and other matters in this country. There is a Dagbani proverb about a woman called Munaya. The husband used to complain that his wife was fond of beating him and his friends will say he was telling a long tail. One market day Munaya actually got hold of the husband at the market place and trounced him. So the man said 'zaa yan nya Munaya' meaning everybody will now see Munaya's real character.

The parochial schools ought to be allowed to keep to their customs and traditions; that is the norm the world over. The fact that the government supports these institutions does not remove the influences or the footprints of the missions upon these schools. And I think those who choose these schools are apprised of all the rules, including the religious devotions.....
Purely public schools ought to remove all vestiges of religious services and conform to secular practices. And so should all public gatherings refrain from any kind of religious services. GHANA IS A SECULAR STATE.
Finally, the danger of Islamic radicalism makes it unwise to grant any kind of concessions to their religious demands. It will just set up the platform of further demands. Muslims should rather occupy themselves with demonstrating against religious terrorism, which should be the supervening concern at this time.
And, the nation ought to move away
from its focus on religion and concentrate on the traditional Ghanaian values: truth, honesty charity..... Those qualities that will make us better people ought to be foregrounded at this time.

i have a serious problem with "mission" schools. i believe that no religious institution should be allowed to run an educational institution in this or any other country. the simple reason is that religious schools do not tolerate diversity as we are currently seeing from catholic mission schools and secondly since religion is about indoctrination and not education mission schools or schools run by religious institutions cannot encourage the development and adherence to critical thought among pupils. before anyone decides to run their mouths i will give a national example to support my point - our primary and secondary schools run a subject most often known as moral and religious studies yet the current generations from 60 year olds to 5 year olds lack discipline, morals and ability to think - we cannot supply ourselves with food, electricity and water even though our governments and private sector is littered with educated persons from mission schools, corruption is our friend despite the teaching of religious studies etc, we litter our envirinment, our attitude to work is abysmal, we lack discipline when using roads and other resources etc . countless decades of religious and moral studies and mission schools and all we have is corruption, ignorance, indiscipline and a refusal to apply critical thought to problems.
