There's too much pressure on Bawumia - Allotey Jacobs on running mate saga

Bernard Allotey Jacobs, a former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is facing growing pressure to announce his running mate for the 2024 elections.

Jacobs emphasised that such pressures are customary in the realm of politics, often driven by individuals seeking personal gain. Drawing parallels, he highlighted a similar instance former President John Mahama faced before he announced his running mate.

Speaking on a panel discussion on Peace FM's Kokrokoo on April 24, 2024, he dismissed the notion of regional biases influencing the selection process, citing it as a tactic to sway decision-making.

Jacobs further voiced support for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Energy Minister, as a fitting candidate for the position.

"I am on the issue of pressure being mounted on Dr. Bawumia to name his running mate.

"Yes, there is indeed too much pressure. It's a common practice; others have faced similar pressure.

"They did the same to President Mahama, suggesting that if he didn't choose a Voltarian, certain consequences would follow. Accusations were made that her (Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang's) own people didn't vote for her. All those things are just lies. Personally, I support Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; I believe he is the best fit for that position," he said.
