National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Salam Mustapha has expressed confidence in his party retaining power in the 2024 general elections despite a widespread concern of the government being unpopular.
According to him, while national politics concentrated in the capital seems to be fixated on factors such as exchange rate and other economic indicators, the overall components influencing the outcome of the upcoming elections goes beyond Accra.
“When you are in Accra, you will not understand some of these things. But when you go to the grounds and you understand the dynamics, you will learn to appreciate what is happening.
“The dynamics differ, politics in Accra is different; the things of concern in Accra are completely different from Ejura or Bimbilla or Jomoro… The person there is not concerned about issues of the dollar. You are having conversations about the dollar but they are looking for Condemn (weedicide) to farm with. So if you give him Condemn, he is just totally fine.
“But for us in Accra engaged in national politics we believe the entire Ghana is Accra; we’ve Accralised Ghana. But when you leave Accra and go out, the energy is totally different,” he stated in interview on Angel FM’s morning show hosted by Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah.
He emphasised that the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the face of some challenges has performed very well to guarantee the NPP and its flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia victory in the 2024 general election.
He noted that contrary to the performance of the current government, the opposition National Democratic Congress and its candidate, former President John Dramini Mahama have no superior track record.
He further rebuffed concerns about the emergence of a third force to dislodge the duopoly of the NPP and the NDC. According to him, he does not see any political party or movement breaking the duopoly of the two leading parties anytime soon.
