In Solidarity With “Aya” Over Job Freeze In The Public Sector

We have followed with keen interest, public discourse and discussions in the media about the infamous Economic Governance and Poverty Reduction credit facility been offered the government of Ghana by the World Bank and wish to note as follows:

1. Government has shown a clear lack of knowledge and understanding of the perilous plight of the ordinary Ghanaian job seeker i.e. there are not enough jobs out there for the teaming graduates seeking employment.

2. That National Service Persons and students in their final years of study are the hardest hit by the agreement by government to impose a two year ban on employment of fresh potential into the public sector unless a vacancy is created due to death, retirement, dismissal or similar circumstances.

3. That this ill-thought policy of a social democratic government is a disincentive to education and training to become responsible citizens of this country. This would undoubtedly increase streetism, criminal activities and several other vices.

4. It is high time the destinies of Ghanaians are put in the hands of Ghanaians. This sacrifice on Ghanaian interest on the altar of the Bretton woods institutions is unacceptable. Government must identify more innovative ways and less injurious ways of raising loans for the so-called developmental projects in this country.

Based on the aforegoing and many other cogent reasons, we wish to state our unflinching support and solidarity with the Alliance of Youth for Action (AYA). We pledge our total support to this nationalist course. We call on all service personnel, students and youth of this country to heed the timely call of president Barack Obama that we should hold our governments accountable and responsible.
