Funko Beach now a public place of convenience

Funko, a small fishing community in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region, is gradually loosing it beach beauty to open defecation by the residents of the area.

The community members despite the location of the Casablanca and Funko beach resort that lies along the area continue to loiter the beaches with toilet and other insanitary materials, which is a big threat to the health and general well-being of the people.

In 2009, the community members, the Assembly and corporate institutions contributed to build two new public places of convenience but a court injunction on one of the facilities had resulted in the community using the beach as place of convenience claiming that they could not travel a long distance to defecate.

Mr. Andrews Intsiful, Assembly member for Funko, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that land feud between the community and one Madam Yarley had prevented the use of one of the facilities.

Nana Robert Ankrah, Chief fishermen of the Area said rampant defecation was steadily affecting the area and beauty as well as fishing activities in the area.

Mr. Micheal Kpibi, Western Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, has called on the environment unit of the Ahanta West Assembly to be up and doing in arresting the situation to avoid the outbreak of cholera in the area.
