Kwabenya JHS Gets Library

Accra, Jan. 14, GNA - A library constructed with sponsorship from the United Nations World Tourism Organization for Eliminating Poverty (UNWTO-STEP) Foundation for Kwabenya Junior High School (JHS) has been inaugurated at Kwabenya near Accra. Ms Young Shim Dho, Chairperson of the Foundation said it was the 74th library to be built in Africa, and pledged to provide more books and computers to improve reading and learning among the students.

Mrs. Lagergren Annan, wife of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, thanked the foundation for the gesture and urged the students to cultivate the habit of reading to pursue their future dreams and attain higher academic laurels. Mr. Kwabena Owusu Acheampong, Deputy Minister of Tourism, urged the teachers and students to take advantage of the library to improve teaching and learning in the school. Professor Mike Oquaye, Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya expressed appreciation to the Foundation for the gesture and pledged to ensure the library was utilised for the benefit of the students. Mr. John Kwao Sackey, Ga East Municipal Chief Executive, said another library would soon be constructed in the area. Nii Kwao Obuobi Amasa, Chief of Kwabenya, assisted by Mrs. Annan and Ms. Shim Dho, cut the tape to inaugurate the library. The school was established during the 1968/69 academic year.
