Parents have primary responsibility to educate their children

Ho, June 27, GNA - Parents have the primary responsibility in educating their children, Mr Yao Seidu, Ho Municipal Deputy-Director of Education has said.

He said that responsibility must not be seen as that of government. Mr Seidu made this observation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency due to some concerns by some parents regarding the distribution of free school uniforms in the Ho Municipal area.

"Educating your child is just as important as feeding, clothing or sheltering him or her, it is not to be seen as the responsibility of any government," he said.

He said the total number of free school uniforms supplied for distribution in the municipal area were limited and could not go round every pupil as parents expected.

"So far we have received 2,600 sets of uniforms from the government and we have a basic school population of over 25,000, how can we come up with the rest?" he asked.

He said given the current reality, he had to use his discretion to distribute the uniforms to children who were 93really" in need of the uniforms.

Mr Seidu explained that this was the reason why some schools in the Municipal area received fewer uniforms.

He said more than half of the uniforms allocated have been distributed with the remainder not distributed due to transportation difficulties.

Mr Seidu therefore pleaded with parents and pupils in the Municipal area to bear with the situation and gave the assurance that the uniforms would be distributed fairly.
