Footy-ghana.com has gathered that former national goalkeepers Abubakari Damba and Richard Kingson are under consideration as the Ghana Football Association seeks to replace current Black Stars goalkeepers’ trainer Nassamu Yakubu.

According to well-informed sources, the former Great Olympics goalkeepers are battling to the right to travel to Equatorial Guinea as the new Black Stars goalkeepers’ trainer during the 2015 African Nations Cup.

Nassamu Yakubu’s work has come under scrutiny, not least because of the current impasse with Adam Kwarasey and footy-ghana.com has learnt that incoming head coach Avram Grant will consider both Damba and Kingson before making his choice of who replaces Nassamu.

Damba was a member of the Ghana squad that won silver at the 1992 African Nations Cup in Senegal and he was also the first choice goalkeeper as Ghana launched a failed bid to qualify for the 1994 World Cup.

He also served as the goalkeepers’ trainer for the Black Meteors ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but had his stint cut short after allegations of match-fixing were preferred against him during a friendly game with Iran in 2007.

Richard Kingston has represented Ghana a record 90 times and has scored one; in a friendly game with Tanzania.

He has represented the Black Stars at the 1996, 1998, 2000, 2008 and 2010 African Nations Cups, and he captained the Black Stars to second place in Angola in 2010.

He was also Ghana’s first choice goalkeeper for the 2006 and 2010 World Cup tournaments and is currently a free agent after playing for Balikesirspor in the Turkish second tier last term.

Footy-ghana.com understands that Grant will make a firm choice between the two former national goalies after assuming his role as Black Stars head coach on December 1.
