Primary education is the foundation of educational achievement and must be supported in every way. I particularly like you suggestion about teacher preparedness. Those providing education must be properly trained and prepared to deliver the best quality.
They must also be encouraged with good conditions of service to allow them to focus on their job and not be distracted by other economic considerations or expediencies.

Infact, Mr. Eyiah is one of the finest and most objective writer on Ghanaweb. I not only enjoy reading his articles written to the level that all can understand but also learn a lot from them. No wonder I knew Mr Eyiah in Ghana as a great teacher and administrator and hope he is still great in Canada too. More grease to your pen Mr Eyiah! We miss you in Ghana!!

I concur with the writer but I believe free, compulsory and quality education should be extended to and available to all children up to the SHS level or age 18 (the age differ from state to state). This is the policy in all American states -- states also require a minimum of a university degree and teacher certification which is quite rigid. In addition to a continuous assessment of the teachers. I don't see how a small country like Ghana with all our natural and human resources can't implement a similar policy.
We can't develop as a country with the percentage of semi-illiterates and illiterates in the country.

Professor Opoku Agyeman's nomination as Minister of Education is wise and a very capable choice indeed, Ghana deserves to be governed by such well qualified individuals in government. Professor Opoku Agyeman though will do well to steer clear of the non-performance atitude of the governing NDC Administrators and politicians if she means to propel the country forward in modern education as she has the capacity to do. Well recommmended choice of Ministrial appointment, Ghana now awaits for the much needed change in education promised by all well-meaning Presidential candidates in the last December elections to begin.

Tell us how long it took that 'developed' country where you to reach what you are rightly impressed with. While I agree with your call for all politicians to focus, you fail to recognize progress under the NPP and NDC administrations. This attitude of focusing on our deficits to the detriment of our achievements, however modest, has a tinge of neo-colonial psychological frame of mind!Ghana is moving forward!

The wheel has already been invented, we just have to find the right model that suits our environment, so it is not rocket science and not neo-colonial psychology at all. Rome has already been built, we can take some of the relevant building blocks and use them. We just need to start thinking out side the box instead of going in cycles and playing politics with our kids lives. Perhaps if education policies are left to educationist to formulate we would be in a better position than we are now. Ghana is moving forward in some areas but certainly not in education.

Well said, Gye Nyame. Perhaps, Williams misconstrued my article as condemning the efforts of our motherland, Ghana. That was not my intention at all. Infact, upon my last year to Ghana last year I saw and praised the efforts of many Ghanaians in building houses and small businesses for themselves. As an educationist who taught in Ghana from 1973 to 1995 and play the role of an administrator at Asokore-Koforidua SDA Teacher Training College, I am not impressed with the strides we have made so far towards achieving true improvement in our education sector, especially at the basic level. Not that we don't have the human and financial resources to do that. However, we have allowed politics to ruin any good efforts we began with! It is clearly written on the walls! I am not preaching neo-colonial ideas in my write-ups, I am talking about true concerns. Our politicians must allow our capable educationists to come together devoid of any political pressure to move our education sector forward. Again, I will say that the world is now a global village! Thanks, Gye Nyame! Read my article again with a nationalistic mind, not a partisan mind to think I don't appreciate the efforts of governments be it NDC or NPP. God bless our homeland Ghana.

Nduom has been pushing this FCUBE now termed FCCE by PPP for years. Great to see others jumping on the bandwagon. It is a great bandwagon for the nation. So let Mahama get on it so our children and the nation can benefit.

Dr. Nduom is the best option that Ghana missed. It is not surprising that the PPP has done this. I know that if Ghanaians give the PPP a chance, they would do very well.
