Dove; A Town Where It Is A Taboo To Menstruate, Give Birth And Bury The Dead

It is a taboo for women to give birth to babies or even menstruate in Dove, a town in the Mafi Traditional Area of the Central Tongu District.

As such, those expecting their menstruation and pregnant women in labour are by whatever possible means carried out of the town. They only return after delivery and after their menses have stopped.

This revelation was made by Dr Joseph Nuertey, the Volta Regional Medical Superintendent, when he delivered the state of health care in the region during the first general meeting of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC) at Ho.

Dr Nuertey lamented that because of the age-long taboo, all efforts by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to establish a health facility to take care of birth and other issues had proven futile. He added that the taboo also forbade the burial of the dead in the town.

The medical superintendent, therefore, appealed to the VRHC to use their good offices to appease the gods in the area to lift the taboo. Dr Nuertey's revelation left the traditional rulers dumbfounded.

This prompted the Paramount Chief of the Battor Traditional Area, Togbega Patamia Dzekley VII, to say that he would immediately contact the chief and elders of Dove to see what could be done to resolve the issue

In most circumstances, it is the women, who are mostly farmers that nurture the children until maturity. According to the medical superintendent, he has been told that the gods of the town frown on anybody who flouts the taboo.

Dr Nuertey announced that maternal mortality in the region continued to be too high and this he attributed to the inadequate number of medical personnel and facilities in the region.

The opening paragraph states, “I came to serve; I have finished my time here on earth and have moved on to everlasting rest and celestial duties with my heavenly father.”

The immediate question is; how did the dead man come to sign his own personal tribute, since he is already in heaven?

The letter then goes on melodramatically, “As you leaf through these pages of my life’s story, I pray to God that it touches your heart in many positive ways. Weep not, I am not dead. I am alive and awake in the Lord. Ghana will not die; Ghana will live to declare the works of the Lord. If we want to follow a God, we should follow the God who was with us before the foreigners brought in their religious books in the FAKE name of HOLY BOOK. What we need is to use our brains properly to think of what we can see and not what no one can see or feel.

Yes, priest and pastors are suppose to give good example, but even if they fail, just like any human being, can't they advice our youth? The Church and its members are no longer investing their time, energy and resources in providing first rate education to the children of the church. I remember growing up my parents, sisters, brothers,and fathers of the parishes and dioceses teaching us well in the teachings of the church as well as in the academic subjects. Whether it was Catechism, Chemistry or Calculus, we were well taught and disciplined.
We need more than Opoku Wares, St. Roses, St. Augustines, Holy Childs, St. Thomas Aquinases, Bishop Hermanses.
I still remember the life stories of the Saints, they made us better human beings.
We've got to build more great Catholic Church schools. It is the only way to save the Children and the Church.

Bad attitude by the youth has nothing to do with leadrship of the country. When the religious leaders whose duty it is to deliver these teeming youth from cults, irresponsible behavious themselves have joining that fray. What do we expect. There is serious spiritism, promiscuity, total confusion spiritually. Satan has taken over these youth and that is why they are behaving that way. You as a pastor realizing it should put it into prayers for these youth to change their attitude and behavious and come to know God. Knowing God is the only way their negative attitudes and behavious could be changged.
