Dove; A Town Where It Is A Taboo To Menstruate, Give Birth And Bury The Dead

It is a taboo for women to give birth to babies or even menstruate in Dove, a town in the Mafi Traditional Area of the Central Tongu District.

As such, those expecting their menstruation and pregnant women in labour are by whatever possible means carried out of the town. They only return after delivery and after their menses have stopped.

This revelation was made by Dr Joseph Nuertey, the Volta Regional Medical Superintendent, when he delivered the state of health care in the region during the first general meeting of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC) at Ho.

Dr Nuertey lamented that because of the age-long taboo, all efforts by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to establish a health facility to take care of birth and other issues had proven futile. He added that the taboo also forbade the burial of the dead in the town.

The medical superintendent, therefore, appealed to the VRHC to use their good offices to appease the gods in the area to lift the taboo. Dr Nuertey's revelation left the traditional rulers dumbfounded.

This prompted the Paramount Chief of the Battor Traditional Area, Togbega Patamia Dzekley VII, to say that he would immediately contact the chief and elders of Dove to see what could be done to resolve the issue

In most circumstances, it is the women, who are mostly farmers that nurture the children until maturity. According to the medical superintendent, he has been told that the gods of the town frown on anybody who flouts the taboo.

Dr Nuertey announced that maternal mortality in the region continued to be too high and this he attributed to the inadequate number of medical personnel and facilities in the region.

I think the military should deal ruthlessly with any stupid individual or group of persons who want to disturb the peace in this area. I read somewhere last week where some people in Yendi inspite a directive not to celebrate the festival, went ahead to disobey the order right in the presence of millitary practising for it.

In fact people should be discipline so severely that they will for once in their life time never disregard the relative peace we have in Ghana.

Lets look at things this way, if Nana Addo and co should loose the case at the supreme court and decide to set up a paralel government in Ghana, celebrate independence day with his own security, do what ever duty that has been confered on only the president of the republic, how would it look like and what will be the reaction of Ghanaians and the security agencies? This is exactly what is hapening in dagbon, the Abudus lost a case at the supreme court to rule Dagbon and have decided to aclaim to themselves paralel rulership of the kingdom and have even gone to the extent of staging a traditional coup. Now after the coup, they were prevented from subverting the rules of court and so could not take up the leadership of the Kingdom. A regent have subsequently been installed to oversee the state of the kingdom and yet Abudus still want to portray themselves as rulers of Dagbon. How can we have two kings in Dagbon. We recognise only one king and that is the Regent untill such a time that a sustantive king is installed. Therefore no any other person has a right to perform any customary or traditional rites on behalf of the people of Dagbon without the authority of the Yana or his regent.It is not that Abudus are being treated unfairly but that they are being stopped from performing an illigality according to the rule of the supreme court and the traditions of Dagbon.
