A woman walks into a Kalgoorlie accountant's office and tells him that she needs to file her taxes.
The accountant says, "Before we begin, I'll need to ask you a few questions."
He gets her name, address etc. and then asks,"What's your occupation?"
"I'm a prostitute," she says.
The accountant is somewhat taken aback and says, "Let's try to re phrase that."
The woman says, "OK, I'm a high-end call girl". "No, that still won't work. Try again."
They both think for a minute; then the woman says,"I'm an elite poultry farmer."
The accountant asks, "What does poultry farming have to do with being a prostitute?"
"Well, I raised a thousand cocks last year."
"Poultry Farmer it is."

I have never been a fun of the prescriptions Terkper has been administering to the country, but for this statement he made I fully support him. Churches must rather set a good example if they're truely following Christ. The state doesn't tax the tithe and offerings they receive, but if they make a business out of it, or if a pastor creates a business out of his or her paycheck, why shouldn't they honour their civic obligation to the state as a citizen?

Great decision by the minister. These pastors are fooling people with the name of God to get rich. They rob the ignorant, the desperate and the blind to make money off them by convincing them with prehistoric stories. And they climax their mastery architecture of superstitious and hyperbolic preachings/teachings with clairvoyant activities under the pretext of the power of God and of the Holly Spirit. These guys have deceived the general public for far too long with their shameful activities to make themselves and their families rich while at the same time deem it not fitting to pay taxes. The government should impose the highest tax rate on churches apart from the churches that invest their monies to improve the lives of communities. Churches that may be excluded are the: Roman Catholic Church, Presbyterian Church, Anglican Church, Methodist Church and SDA (and I few others I may not know of). All others including the churches of Duncan Williams, TB Joshua, Iswood Anaba etc etc. should be made to pay not less 40% tax on their gross income. Useless pastors

So Mr. "Minister of Finance and Economic Planning" you are trying to tell us that 50 years of independence with all our Gold, Diamond, timber Bauxite, non traditional exports and now oil, it is the taxes from the churches (should be all religious bodies) that Ghana needs to develop?
And that with these taxes without accountability, probity, eradication of corruption, manipulated judgement depts, Ghana will suddenly jump onto the tracks of development?
I don't buy this. You better find some statistical figures to explain our impoverishment and how to move forward than this "cocoa ase" class one reasoning that these taxes will help improve Ghana's infrastructure.
Remove the "speck in your eyes before trying to remove the log in your neighbours eyes". That's what the same Bible you qouted says. Deal with the corrupt gov't first before dealing with charitable organization. Then we will all support you. Not when you are corrupt than the word corrupt do you expect us to support this idea and then the money raised will end up in your pockets.

No one and I mean no one who find the Divine if they go to a building and also for free I will tell you Mr pastor, you do not need to die first to go into the heavenly worlds Jesus and all the many Masters or Christs if you want have spoken about in every spiritual book that exist. Luke 9:27, tell you it is possible to attain this but the churches do not have the method because they think it is about the mind. Mr , this is soul stuff and if you do not transcend your 3 minds (you guys use the lowest mind in your churches and do not know even about the other 2 and how to go beyond it), you will never find the soul which is sleeping in the highest center in the body. the doorway is in Matt 6:22, if thy eye be single thy whole body shall be full of light. this is just the 1st heaven. There are many above. Wanna learn more - listen to Ishwar Puri on You tube or Gar Olsen. These are just two of the guys teaching true spirituality on the planet. I have know this stuff since the age of 14 so if you ask the Divine within, the information will be made available and you will even think it is coincidence but it is no i promise you. Good luck in your sojourn to the Pure positive God worlds.

The Churches, have now become easy scapegoat targets for the government. You should have dealt with this issue from 2008 when you came into office. This request is now an afterthought, after bleeding the economy to dry bones, as Mahama himself said.
This is a government with no vision, no strategy, no plans short or long term; all they care about is looting the coffers dry and then turning round to find a scapegoat. Have you finished collecting effectively what is due to the state at the ports in taxes? What a crap government you crazy Ghanaians have voted into power!

Tekper is deeply immersed in the Church. He is not ant- christian. He is doing his work as he should to make Ghana better. Me think governments have pampered the churches for far too long because they fear they would lose votes. But the Ghanaian who goes to church knows that they are cheated by the churches yet they are unable to stop either because it has become part of them or because the fear if they stop, with due apologies to Awooonor, they would 'incur the wrath of God' as religious defaulter. Making the churches pay taxes and using the revenue to better lots of Ghanaians is therefore a good news which would be welcome by many a church goer. Fear not Tekper, go ahead.

Talk is cheap ! Mr Terkper, you seem to found excuses for the gov't non performance inefficiencies and gross incompetence, or lack of plans to expand existing facilities by most officials in positions of authority in the Country.
I do not agree with you that, the Churches which do not pay taxes is the reason why the
Country is experiencing, unstable power supply, water shortages, lack of infrastructure in Schools and financial distress in the Country. The reasons are as stated above,in addition to Corruption, misapplication, misappropriation, gross financial mismanagement and “ personal Stomach Centered"CEO's, or most persons in positions of authority and politicians. Therefore, blames
on the Churches is neither here nor there.
Some of the problem could be attributed to gov't irresponsible abrogated/abrogation of Contract, only to end up paying a hefty amount of money as.Judgment Debts (underground) until recently unknown to the Ghanaian Tax payers. Only one amount of those reckless judgment debts payment, is far more than what the revenue authority could get from the Churches for about 40 yrs.
(I have not said Churches should not pay taxes when they are to do so).
Again we live in a Country, where the gov't do not know the Churches deserved to get financial help or grant to help their Social Welfare program,if any. Therefore, it stands out that,if a Church is in a profitable venture, what and how is the money derived from the venture applied. Is it used to help members or the public,or the Rev,Pastors and the Elders Share the amount among themselves.
The Minister of Finance, Mr Seth Terkper should know that before an attempt is made to suggest Churches Should pay taxes.
Another drain on the Country's economy is Corruption. These proven deals : Woyome,
Gyeeda,lsophon,Sada, CP,Waterville,Akonfem,
Betty Mould,Odruo,to mention only but a few.
Terkper, retrieve these Stolen huge amount of monies. That is the problem with Ghana's Economy before you talk about the Churches.
To be continued.

If you succeed in taxing the churches and still your revenue expectation fall short, what will you tax next? Air or what?
Do you people know what to do? Was it late last year, Mahama said that Ghana loses over One hundred million dollars at the ports. Now, if the evidence is there, why not pluck all the leaking holes and redirect the revenue into the national coffers? Do we need a rocket scientist to come and tell us what to do?
Additionally, we must wean ourselves off that "colonial mentality" of housing police officers, politicians etc. As long as these people get their salaries and wages, they should be able to house themselves like any other Ghanaian worker.
Tell us the amount the nation spent on housing police officers and politicians every month. Do you people have brains? I doubt.

Pelicles, As far as Mr. Tekepr remains the Finance Minister, the only thing he will propose are taxes but nothing else. When his counterparts in other parts of the world working feverishly to create favourable avenues for job creation to entreprenuers, all that Terkper is thinking about is taxes which kills jobs.
The Ports are overtaxing too much. Immediately Mahama ascended to the presidency in 2012 after Mills death, a 2 1/2% special levy was introduced by Mahama himself before last year's additional 2 1/2% VAT. increase on vehichle.
Like you said, it is time that sort of stupid housing of police officers, government officials and do nothing politicians come to an end. Nobody asked them to go and apply for those jobs and to be housed by the tax payer - the "colonial mentality" of those nonsense should come to an end. They are all part of unnecessary expenditure which is putting pressure on the economy. The colonial masters who introduced that "robbery system" are not practicing it in their countries and why should we continue to let the few among us take that advantage to rob the majority?
One question for Mr. Terkper is when he was in US, was his employer paying for his accomodation whereas in Ghana he is been put in bungalow at the expense of the tax payer and calling for Churches to pay taxes? This stupid tax and spend economic policy on salaries, wages and allowances for the public workers made of about 700,000 people will not help in anyway but eventually collpse the entire economy. He needs to focus on avenues for job creation than that sort of stupid taxes. E&OE.

Pelicles, do you have brains?
Even if all the taxes are collected at the ports, and we stop housing police officers, politicians and other public servants, what would that have to do with taxing churches on their business income?
Do you not think that churches, and every one else engaged in any form of business, should contribute taxes to the exchequer? Is it not these taxes that government uses to provide amenities and services for public use?
Do you not realise that there is a short fall of government revenue, and that this must be remedied to balance the budget?

Mr. Terkper's comment on the need for religious organizations to pay taxes is in order. Payment of taxes should however go with a judicious utilization of the monies raised in order for the nation to achieve its financial goals. If some are paying and others are squandering, how do we get our goals achieved? There should be accountability for monies collected. This will drive others to see the benefits of paying taxes. These sentiments have been expressed over and over again and I am sure, it is now akin to beating a dead horse. Hopefully someone somewhere will hear our cry for accountability this time around.
