Though it shouldn't be attacks and blame game on the current government. Part of the problem is ours, we should stop throwing refuse into drains. Government should enforce laws with action and also find some ways to better our drains. Please cut out political gimmicks.

However with the population explosion in Accra and other urban areas in Ghana these problems will continue to recur until they are fixed.

What we need is modern sewage engineering, with drainage systems underground and powered by pumping stations. The money stolen and kept by Woyome with the collusion and connivance of both NDC and NPP will be more than sufficient to transform Greater Accra and equip it with modern sewerage and flood protection systems!

People should be responsible and stop disposing rubbish into the poor drainage system in Ghana as a whole, not only in Accra . Governments will come and go; they can not solve all problems if people do not take responsibility for their acts. Why should we also have to wait for governments to solve our problems when we know very well the root cause?

And it reads: And God gave Ghana a blood thirsty leader John, who came to rule for 19 years who tried to focus on changing human nature. The rains came every year and there were floods in Accra. One day he took a spade and went to dig out the accumulated garbage and filth in the Nima drainage channel himself to show leadership of self help. The floods continued but Nima was occasionally spared. He left office without changing human nature but left poverty for his people. And the floods continued. Then God gave us three more Johns as leaders in succession. The chronicless of second John is in another book but his focus was poverty reduction. And the floods continued yearly. Then the NDC bloodline gave us third John ,the peace king, but he passed due to ill health and then came John , the handsome and corruption headmaster. God was angry and visited on us fire and flood and deaths But what did John the handsome do? He instead spent money on interchanges dubbed Dubai , named after his favorite hedonistic paradise! And the people cheered but sacked him from office. And the rains came as it had always come.
Dr Zenator , it is sad to think Government ( the executive) alone is the solution? The master plan for flood control in Accra has been around before your parents started dating. My advise to you is if you care about floods and not just showing empathy for your constituents , start doing some research and initiate a movement of all stakeholders to solve this yearly flooding problem. Part of the solution is in Parliament where you serve. I hope by government you are not referring only to the Executive branch? You should think about government as the three branches of governance including the governed- the people. Money for flood project alone will not solve the flood issue. We need a legal regime of proper zoning, construction and citizen behavior. Dr Ephraim Amu admonishes us , progress for our country depends on our behavior " Omanfo bra na ekyre ". Please change your mindset and offer solutions instead of expectation dependency and lamentations. We continue to behave like the proverbial Volture , waiting for the passing of the rainy season to build a permanent shelter.

And allow the sound minds to reason for solutions .But my reasoning is that most of the water that flood Accra comes from the mountains. So why dont we build dikes and reservoirs as water flows from the mountains to break the flow. About ten reservoirs built on the Odaw river as it flows to Accra could reduce drastically the amount of water flow. We then have to construct appropriate drains to hold the rain waters and direct them to the sea and reservoirs, some built underground . This could help reduce the flooding. Engineers; get to the drawing board and come out with plans.

Previous governments have neglected this issue of flooding especially in the capital city Accra, and it is about time some serious thoughts are given to this problem. Because of bribery and corruption anybody can build anywhere in the city. The city engineers do not do any serious homework to find out the cause and effects of locations of city dwellings. They do everything "By-Heart". The city has all the right to stop any form of practice that could jeopardize the health and safety of the general public. A place like Accra has no efficient sewerage system. Any Tom Dick and Harry can squat anywhere either to "poo" or to "pee" and all nasty stuff are dumped into those small and shallow stinking gutters. When these gutters are all clogged with debris, where do you expect the heavy rain waters to flow? They all find their ways to plain areas and cause a lot of havoc to houses, badly constructed roads, etc, etc. We are not stupid people and we still have people with great ideas, but since most people at the helm are greedy and incompetent, the average poor hardworking Ghanaian bears the worst part of the disasters that occurs. It is about time we get to work on important things and I challenge the present government to put into its priority list the drainage systems in the whole country.
